Prologue
All I've ever dreamed of is being famous: people knowing who I am, recognizing my music. As ambitious as I was, I always had doubt that the dream would come true. I lied to myself constantly "You're a star. You're it." I believed that if I told the lie enough times, then eventually it would come true. I worked for years as a waitress, a gogo dancer, a stripper, anything that would pay for me to live on my own. My father had only given me a year to become famous, or he'd send me back to school. I played in clubs everynight, performing pop burlesque shows with my best friend Lady Starlight. At that point, I was no longer Stefani Germanotta, I was Lady Gaga.
Finally everything changed when I got signed on to Def Jam records. I felt on top of the world, nothing could've stopped me; except getting a call one day, after leaving the hospital, being told the label had dropped me. Everything felt like shit. I was depressed, I wanted to give up; but I picked myself up, put on my leather boots and got back out there. It paid off too. Not long after I was signed to Interscope Records. That was when everything fell into place. Everything was perfect. We put out my first album shortly after: The Fame.
Everyone described me as the girl who became famous overnight. But I wasn't. I worked hard for it. And what nobody knew, was what I went through shortly after being signed to Interscope Records.
