Oh, I missed lacrosse season.

I walked with Scott and Stiles to the field for practice. Tryouts were today.

"Of course you're still the team captain," I told Scott. "You kept your grades up, just like Coach told you to, right?"

"Yeah, but he never told me I was back on the team," Scott told us. "He just told me to show up at tryouts today."

"We got bigger things to deal with anyway," Stiles said. "Did you tell Argent yet?"

"Ah!" Scott said. "Yeah, I texted him, but he didn't get back to me."

I turned to face him as we stopped walking. "You told him that his sister Kate came back from the dead over a text?"

"I didn't have enough money to call France."

"Yeah, you think you got money problems?" I asked. "Try paying for two MRIs and two visits to Eichen House."

"Another notice?" Scott asked.

"Yeah, this one said, 'Final'," Stiles answered. "And what the hell are we doing here anyway? We got like 117 million problems and worrying about our status on the lacrosse team is not one of them."

Scott nodded behind us. "It is now."

Stiles and I turned our heads to see a kid and in the goal catching every shot. Every. Single. Shot.

"Who the hell is that?" I asked.

The kid took off his helmet, walking out of the goal and toward the two players who threw the balls.

"Okay, maybe we should practice just a little bit," Stiles said, he and Scott going onto the field.

I saw Malia at the door to math, backing away like she could skip.

I put my hands on her shoulders and made her go back into class.

"I hate math," Malia told me. "It's pointless."

"It's school," I said as I led her to the desks next to Lydia. "School is important and math is essential."

Malia sat next to Lydia, and I sat behind her as she looked back at me. "To what?"

"Knowing how much to tip at restaurants."

Lydia looked at me, her hand going to her desk as she looked up to Malia. "And other less important things, like medicine, economics, engineering." She looked back at me.

I looked up to Malia. "Tipping."

Ms. Fleming was at the front. "All right, volunteers to the board. Lydia, Diego, Malia."

Diego and Lydia stood, going to the board.

"Um . . ." Malia trailed off. "I didn't volunteer."

"You did now. To the board."

Malia looked back at me. I smiled at held up my thumbs. She growled at me.

I sat back. Uh-oh.

Malia went up to the board

I didn't hear what Malia or Lydia said at the board, but I got a text on my phone, my phone vibrating.

I got it out, looking at the text from Dad.

Triplehomicidedeveloping.

Holy crap . . .

"An ax murder?" Kira asked as she, Stiles, Scott and I walked down the hall.

"A family-murdering ax murderer," I answered.
