Hermione and Fred became very close friends after that. Hermione had seen the gentle and caring side to Fred Weasley, and she still wanted that Fred in her life.

Hermione knew she could tell Fred anything, and she took great comfort in having him around her. Even when he and George left Hogwarts she would send owls to him, he was a great friend. She never forgot her feelings for Fred, though at times they did get buried under feelings for others, like his brother Ron. Her feelings for Ron were the only thing she didn’t tell Fred about, because her feelings for Fred had grown since that amazing day. She loved him and she loved Ron too, but her feelings for Fred were always stronger.

It broke Hermione’s heart to be away from Fred, and every day she was on the run she would listen intently to Potterwatch, hoping to hear Fred’s voice.

Fred missed and loved Hermione just as much, but he would never do anything about it, not as long as he knew Ron still had feelings for her.

Hermione never meant to do anything about her feelings for Ron, but during the battle of Hogwarts she found herself with her arms wrapped around his neck. He had just shown her how truly caring he was also. Ron knew he shouldn’t be kissing her, he knew how Fred felt about her, but he couldn’t bring himself to stop it.

Not too long later they both felt like they had been punished for that moment of passion when Fred Weasley was lying dead at their feet. Ron was in tears because he had just betrayed and lost his brother. Hermione was in tears because she had just betrayed and lost the man she loved above everyone else.

Until the day she died Hermione held a candle for Fred. He was her first love. Hermione loved Ron so much, but she would always love Fred just a little more, he was her first.
