I yawned, rolling off the mattress, the sunlight fell into the room and warmed my naked back. I got out of bed. I could hear talking outside my room and the smell of food draped the room and whispered my name; I slipped on a shirt, my sweatpants hung loosely off me. I unlocked my door and stepped out, Preston was in the kitchen with Avery, they were cooking obviously and Savannah was on the couch, her eyes barely open. "Smells good" I mumbled, I moved over to see what they were cooking.
Pancakes, bacon and eggs, "Get the food from Albert?" I asked, and Preston nodded, "Yep, the bacon from his pigs and eggs from the chickens. He also had waffles but the chefs agreed on pancakes" Avery lifted her hand up and highfives Preston before continuing with the pancakes. She flipped them over while Preston glanced at me, "How would you like your eggs? We are all having scrambled"
I thought it over before shrugging, "I'll take scrambled as well then" I said with a smile before lifting my pack of cigarettes up and my lighter. "I am going out for a smoke, tell me when it's done." I said before stepping out. The cold air bite at my exposed skin, I shivered, the October air was tough, it seemed to be twice as cold as before. I took out a cigarette, stuck it into my mouth and lite it up. I inhaled the smoke before blowing it back out, it relaxed me. I sat down onto the chair on the porch, watching the treeline, I froze as I saw movement out of the corner of my eye, I glanced over but there was nothing. I shrugged it off before getting wrapped up in my thoughts. I jumped slightly when there came a tap from the door, I glanced over and Avery was laughing at me from the other side of the door. I rolled my eyes at her before dropping my cigarette onto the floor, I stomped on it, so it wouldn't catch fire before stepping inside.
My stomach growled and the others smiled at me, "Go get yours" Preston said, sitting down with one pancake, two pieces of bacon and some scrambled eggs. Avery was eating two pancakes and four pieces of bacon with quite a bit of scrambled eggs. I picked up a plate and put three pancakes onto my plate, and a bit of scrambled eggs. I waited for Savannah to grab her bacon before grabbing six pieces of bacon. When I sat down, Preston looked shocked, staring at my plate while Avery laughed, "Get enough?" She asked with a grin and I shot them an amused smile, "No, I didn't, I might get more after" Preston opened his mouth to say something but shut it and took a bite of his pancakes. I cut into the three stacked pancakes, taking a small triangle and shoving my fork into them, I took a bite and was surprised how soft it was without butter or syrup, it melted in my mouth instantly and I couldn't help but let out a satisfied groan, "Mm mm delicious" I said and Avery and Preston beamed.
I grabbed a knife and buttered the pancakes before glancing up as Savannah cleared her throat, when Avery glanced up as well as Preston, Savannah spoke. "Are we going be doing farm work to help out?" The other two glanced at me and I nodded slowly while squeezing the syrup onto the buttered pancakes. "I think we should, we won't be doing too hard of stuff, seeing as you guys are city folk" Avery looked slightly affronted by the comment but I kept on, "We will probably doing things like feeding the animals, cleaning up after them"
Avery suddenly spoke, "I want to do a bit of hunting today with a horse, so save something for me afterwards", Preston glanced at her. She locked eyes with him for half a second before giving a slight shake of her head but Preston spoke, "I'm going with you". Avery and Preston had a silent conversation for a moment, never looking away from each other before Avery sighed. "Fine." She agreed and I raised an eyebrow. Something was going on but I dismissed it. "You should ask Albert first" I warned and they both nodded, Savannah also looked confused so she wasn't apart of whatever they were conspiring.
I finished my food, just as Avery did. I put my plate in the sink before picking up another piece of bacon and eating it as I walked. I headed into my room to change into a long sleeved black shirt and loose, ripped jeans. I stepped out, Avery had changed as well, I couldn't help but run my eyes over her. She looked good in everything; she was dressed in a brown shirt with sleeves that stopped above her elbow. She wore skinny jeans that hugged her curves... I shook my head to get over myself. Avery slipped on a denim jacket that ended in the middle of her rib cage. Preston was gone, probably changing while Savannah was still eating. "Taking the dogs?" I questioned and Avery shook her head, "They could probably help out here more"
Preston stepped out, dressed in a wife-beater shirt, jacket and jeans, he smiled at Avery and she waved. "We are going to go check with Albert about the horses then go hunting" Avery picked up something that I hadn't noticed till now, her crossbow, hunting rifle... and pistols? She hadn't taken that yesterday... I shrugged it off as Preston had a crowbar hanging from his side. Probably just in case of infected. They stepped out of the house and I glanced out the window, watching them go. When they reached the house, I turned to pet the pit bull, Mozart. "Good boy" I muttered, subconsciously.
Savannah snorted with laughter behind me and I turned around, "What?" I questioned and she shot me an amused look. "You" She said simply. My eyebrows furrowed in confusion and she rolled her eyes. "You crushing on Avery" She said, a grin covering her face. I could feel my cheeks get a little redder and I coughed awkwardly, "I don't know what you are talking about"
She groaned, "It's soooo obvious. I can't believe nobody but me noticed!" Savannah crossed her arms, I looked away, "What about you and Preston?" I countered and she laughed, "Hey, I haven't decided yet. He may be cute but I don't think he's my type" She said, with arrogance and I couldn't help but feel proud of her. She has courage.
I felt a weird shiver of fear hurdle through me. I felt like something bad was going to happen...Someone was watching me.
