Melanie led me out of the crowd. On the other side of the building was a clearing, with many different coloured circles on the ground.

“Melanie,” I asked.

“What is it?”

“What do I do now?”

Melanie paused for a second. She looked around.

“Wait here. I’ll send someone to you until your mentor arrives.”

Then Melanie walked away, leaving me alone once more. I sat down on the floor, stroking my newly gained wings.

Everything felt so different here.

Was that a good thing?

“Hey you!” I heard a boy’s voice. I looked up to see Luke.

“What do you want?” I gritted through clenched teeth. Something rubbed me the wrong way about this boy.

“I’m supposed to watch you until Miki arrives. I’m your babysitter.”

“I don’t need a babysitter. What do I look like, five years old?”

I stood up and he looked me from head to toe.

“Sort of.”

“That’s it!” I cried, and threw a punch at him. Laughing, he glided into the air, just out of my reach.

“Don’t make me put you to sleep again,” he said, “you still have no power against me.”

Sighing, I looked away.

“So?” Luke taunted, “You aren’t even going to try? You have wings, use them, idiot.”

“I will!” I jumped into the air. My wings flapped a few times, and I fell to the floor. Angry, I tried again. And again.

“How do you do this?”

Luke just laughed.

“We’ll fight some other time,” he said, “ok? Because I want to humiliate you in public.”

“Shut up!” I screeched, and raised my hand again. Just before it hit him, a hand grabbed my shirt and pulled me back.

“Stop it, both of you!” It was a woman’s voice. Scared, I slowly lowered my hand, and turned around.

The woman I turned to did not look angry. Instead, she looked pleased.

“You have a fighting spirit,” she said, “that is good. Use it well, you’ll need it.”

She was young, probably in her early twenties, and she had curly black hair and green eyes. She had wings that looked almost identical to mine, and she was beautiful overall.

“I’m Gwen.” I said, “Nice to meet you.”

“My name is Miki. I will be your mentor during your time here. And I will see to it that you and Luke are separated.”

“My time here?”

“Yes. Come, there is much to discuss.” She beckoned for me to follow her, and led me over to one of the circles on the ground.

“What are these?” I asked.

“These are portals.” She replied, tossing her hair over one shoulder, “they’ll take us anywhere in the sky world.”

“I still don’t understand.”

Miki giggled.

“Everything will be clear soon enough.”
