Peter then took several strong paper bagsout of the boat.
The bags were small butvery heavy, because they were filled withbuilding cement.
Peter passed the bagsone at a time to Simon, and Simon wentdown under the water and pushed eachbag into the pipe.
A few minutes later themouth of the pipe was full of bags ofcement.
Simon came up out of the water for thelast time.‘It’s OK!’
he shouted.
‘We’ve doneit!
The cement is wet already, and in a fewhours it’ll be as hard as a rock.
Nothing cancome out of that pipe now!’
the two menclimbed back into the boat and smiled atthe photographers.
Then Simon stood upin the boat with Christine, and held up along white sheet.
On the sheet waswritten:
GREEN
WORLD
This pipe kills seals
At that moment two things happened.Aman ran out of the factory, shoutingangrily.
And the wind suddenly becamestronger.
It caught the sail and sent itquickly from one side of the boat to theother.
The back of the sail hit Christinehard on the back of the head.
She fell intothe water, like a bag of potatoes.
Then thewind caught the sail again and threw itback across the boat.
This time the boatfell over on its side and lay with its sailunder the water.
Simon was under the sail. The sail and thesheet were all around him, and for severalseconds he could see nothing.
Then hecame up, into the air.
He saw a foot kickinghard in the water beside him.
Someonewas moving under the sail.
Quickly, hewent down under the water again, andtried to help Peter.
But Peter caught holdof Simon, and pulled him under water too.
There was a quick, frightening fight, andthen Simon managed to pull them bothup, into the air again.
They held onto theside of the boat together, breathingdeeply.
Simon saw Susan holding onto the back ofthe boat. Then he heard someoneshouting.
He looked behind him and sawthe man from the factory.
He was shoutingand pointing downstream.
But Simon hadwater in his ears, and at first he couldn’thear the words very well.
Then heunderstood.
