Ashton's POV:

"Young lady," I look up at the old man who is supposed to be teaching us about science. "when is it ever appropriate to wear your hood up in class?"

"I, uh," Shit. Shit. Shit. "was just about to take it off." I grab my stuff and carry it to an empty desk in the back corner. I sit down and look to see if he's still watching me. Sure enough, he's standing there tapping his foot with his arms crossed, staring at me.

"Go on now, we don't have all day."

Come on Ashton. Think of something. You heard the man, you don't have all day.

"You see uh, I can't take off my hood."

"Why is that?"

"Because I, uh," Just say something! "I have this rare disease and the only way for me to get any better is if I wear my hood up 24/7." Disease? Really? Why couldn't I have said that my hair was caught in it or something?! I hear kids around me laughing and whispering. I sink into my chair and pull my hood over my face.

"That was just about the dumbest excuse i've ever heard!" I hear some kid yell from across the room.

I see someone stand up and point at me out of the corner of my eye, "Look at her, her face looks like a tomato!"

Everyone breaks out into laughter, while the poor elder man who calls himself a teacher runs around trying to get everyone to chill out.

"Quiet down, class. Quiet down."

"Who even is this girl?"

"Who even cares?" Apparently it's hysterical whenever somebody makes fun of someone.

The laughter becomes obnoxious to the point where I can't take it. I grab the bathroom pass and run out of the room. I look back at the classroom where I retreated from. You can still hear the insanely loud giggling from all the way down the hallway. I didn't even say something that bad. I mean, I know for a fact i've said worse in my lifetime. I lose my train of thought when i'm all of a sudden bumped back by someone.

"We've got to stop running into eachother like this." He's got this sly smirk on his face.

"Ha. Ha. So punny." I roll my eyes and shove him lightly.

He looks over my shoulder then down to my pass. "Hey, if your looking for the bathroom, you passed it a long time ago."

"Nah, I just needed to get out of class."

He raises an eyebrow at me.

"Sick of being laughed at."

"What's so funny about you?"

"Mr. Feist tried to get me to take off my hood and I made a really bad excuse." I laugh nervously and look down.

"Couldn't be that bad. What'd you say?"

I pick at my nails.

"Aw, come on Ashton. It can't be bad enough you couldn't' even tell me."

"I said I had some rare disease where I couldn't survive unless my hood was up."

He holds back laughter but fails. "You what?!" He claps his hands together. "Welcome back to high school Ashton, the magical place where you have to come up with realistic excuses."

I roll my eyes. "I felt so pressured that I couldn't think straight so I just said the first thing that came to mind."

"And that was the first thing that came to mind? Really?"

"..Yes."

"I'm friends with an idiot."

"I think it's safe to say the same."

"Hey now." He punches my shoulder.

I laugh at his scrunched up expression.

"Honesty is key."

He rolls his eyes. "Okay well i've got to get. If I don't get back soon i'll get another detention for being accused of skipping."

"You got a detention for skipping today?"

"Yeah, no big deal though. They're not that bad."

"Why didn't I get one?"

"They must've not noticed you weren't there, considering it's your first day."

"That's not fair to you though. We didn't have to go, but I agreed."

"No, really, it's fine."

"No, it's not. You've been so nice to me today so I should at least try getting you out of detention."

"Ashton, I'm serious. It's okay."

"No, it's not. Come on, we're going to the front office and getting this worked out." I grab his wrist and drag him to the front.

"Hi, I would like to talk to the principle."

"Speaking to."

"Oh, um, you gave Brendon a detention for skipping class today when really it was my fault. I would like to take the fault for him and go to detention."

"So you skipped?"

"Yes."

"But he came with you?"

"Well," Crap. "Yes."

"Then it looks like you both have detention for skipping class. See you two at 4:15 today."

I walk out defeated.

"Told you you should've stayed quiet and let me go."

"Oh, excuse me for trying to do a good thing for a friend."

"You still did in a way! You got me out of sitting with a bunch of thugs." He smiles cheekily.

"Guess I did."

"See you at 4:15 then."

"See ya."

I walk back into the classroom feeling much more confident.

"Oh, look Ashton the strawberry decided to show her face again!"

I roll my eyes and place the bathroom pass on Mr. Feists desk then sit down.

The whole lesson I zone out and think about what detention's like. What if I get beat up? What if it's like in the movies and they hang me up from my underwear on a hanger? What if one of the kids in this class is in there and I have to listen to them call me a tomato the entire two hours i'm in there for? These are the what if's that led me to my darker days. And I don't plan on going back to those anytime soon. Or at least not while I'm around Brendon. He makes me feel safer and more at peace for some reason. I like that.
