Adrian's PoV
In the dream I'm 13 years old. I lie in bed beside my younger sister as a storm thunders outside.
My sister's terrified of storms.
I take a few deep breaths before pulling her closer to me and closing my eyes, preparing myself for the long night ahead...
Our mums sleep in the room next to us, they're the kindest people I've ever met... I could never forget the day they walked into the orphanage.
'Crash' goes a bolt of lightning outside the window, illuminating our small bedroom.
Little did I know what sound that single bolt of lightning had subdued...
I jolt awake, immediately regretting my decision as I double over in agony from my aching limbs.
I look up to find myself temporarily blinded from the shine of the blazing sun, as it casts thin beams of light through the small barred window in front of me. I look down to find myself lying on cold, hard, stone floor. Great. That's totally what I need after being beaten half to death by five guys twice the size of me!
I look up to the lame excuse of a 'window', my eyes finally adjusting to the bright, white, light of the afternoon sun. How many days had I been unconscious? One... Two?
I slowly stand up, my sore limbs protesting with all their might. But out of all things, I'm used to that. I spin around analysing all the details of the room, from every crack in the wall to every loose spring in the small bed in the corner of the unusually large room.
I've certainly never been in this asylum before, I think, running a slender hand through my jet-black hair. This is the 7th time I've got caught! The first 4 times they put me in the same insane asylum. I now know every single escape route there is in that one. Ever since then, I've been put into a different asylum each time... Each one I escaped.
Sighing, I tilt my head at the reflection of myself in the bullet proof glass that separates me from everything else. I turn around. Once again I'm face to face with the prison-cell-like window. I walk up to it, curling my pale fingers around the cold metal bars, my bitten nails are caked in blood and dirt. A shiver runs down my spine. A press my face up against the bars, this time trying, and failing to ignore the freezing sensation that it gives me, goosebumps ripple down my bruised arms. The bars are barely a finger width apart. I don't even need to look outside to know we're on an island, the distant sound of waves hurtling against rock makes that all too clear.
I search my mind, 'which insane asylum is on an island' I repeat to myself willing my brain to come up with an answer. Suddenly it hits me... The serenity psychiatric institute, known to normal people as 'the most secure asylum in the country', known to mental people as... 'Your worst nightmare'.
I turn around and walk up to the glass wall, tentatively tapping it with a bony finger... Yep, definitely bullet proof. To be honest, I wouldn't expect anything more seeing as I have incredibly 'dangerous' abilities. I look down to the floor on the other side of glass, there printed in huge white letters are the words..
Please stand 6 meters away from the glass.
I laugh to myself, a cold bitter laugh that I unfortunately have gotten used to... It's going to take more than 6 meters to stop me.
