Prologue
Six Years Ago
Something was wrong Parker was supposed to be home twenty minutes ago, he had left to go and get us some ice cream because I'd been craving it. The baby was being extremely restless tonight. I just hoped that the kicks would stop.
Parker and I had been discussing different names depending on what we were having. We decided that if we had a little girl we would name her Emmaline Beth Connors after his mother and my mother, and if we had a boy they would name him Daniel Parker Connors after my father and Parker. I think Parker hoped for a boy, but I knew that I would be happy with either.
During the day Parker would go over to my family's ranch and watch our house being built. It was going to be a wedding present from my parents.
The sound of the phone ringing brought me back to reality. I looked at the number and it wasn't one that I recognized. So I still answered but I was extremely nervous for some reason that I couldn't pin. Then when I heard the familiar voice of Sheriff Barnes, I couldn't help the fear that came with a vengeance. Oh, no. Was this about Parker, I mean he was late getting home from the ice cream parlor? Sheriff Barnes broke me out of my train of thoughts when he said, "I'm awful sorry, Ms. Williams, but we need you to come down to the Police Station. It's an emergency. I'm sorry I can't tell you more now but when you get here I will be able to tell you more, when you get here."
"I'm on my way right now Sheriff Barnes." I couldn't help the fear that crept into my voice.
It had to be about Parker. My mom had just called to say good night and to tell me that she and dad were going to be staying home tonight instead of going dancing like they'd planned. Not to mention Ella had just sent me a text an hour or so ago, asking me to wish her luck on her date. So that took care of everyone but, Parker.
All I could do for now was hope and pray that nothing had happened to Parker. I was honestly afraid.
The twenty minute drive to the station felt like it had taken a lifetime. And now, she had to find out what had happened.
I walked through the doors of the station and looked to see if I saw Sheriff Barnes. Once I had located him, I walked over to him and said, "Sheriff Barnes, I got here as fast as I could. What happened?"
The Sheriff looked at me and said, "Ms. Williams I need you to come into my office and then I can tell you what happened." He led the way and I followed. When we were inside of his office and the door was closed he turned back to me and said, "I am very sorry that I have to tell you this, but Ms. Williams, your fiancé, Parker Connors was involved in a fatal car accident." He could hear her start to cry and not knowing what to do he continued to tell her what had happened. "We believe that he was hit head on by a drunk driver that swerved over into his lane. We also believe that he died instantly. I hope that it will help you sleep easier knowing he didn't die in pain."
Hope's cries broke into full out sobs. Not knowing what else to do the Sheriff told her that her parents would be here within a matter of minutes.
The Sheriff couldn't help but think, here was an eighteen year old girl that had just graduated from high school a week or so ago and was going to get married in a couple weeks, and now her fiancé was dead because of someone else's recklessness.
It couldn't have been more than a minute or so when her mother was there holding her and telling her it was all going to be okay.
Hope couldn't help but think no, it's not okay, Parker's dead and I'm pregnant with his baby.
