“Get back in the Car.” My mum said, her voice floating up to me through the open window of her car. From my angle, I could see that she kept one close eye on me as well as the road. The lanes seemed to stretch out forever, and the grass beside me dragged on in a continuous rhythm.
I shook my head briskly and slowed my pace to match a snails, whilst crossing my arms defensively over my chest. Mum reduced the cars speed as well, trying to keep the open passenger window at level with me.
“Get in the car. Now.”
"No." I said, refusing to look at her. Already my feet were blistering from the flimsy sandals I'd worn, and the cool breeze that swung my golden blonde hair around made me shiver in my white summer dress. Rubbing my arms to warm them up, I glanced around at the barren land. So far only two cars had managed to drive past us, heading in the other direction.
"Cassie, if you don't get in the car, I swear I'll-"
"You swear you'll what mum?" I shouted, clenching my fists as I turned towards her, making her slam on the brakes. "You swear you'll what, take away my cell phone, ground me and lock me up in a tower for the rest of my life? Sorry but I ain’t living that fairytale. Besides, you're already sending me off to live with my uncle for the summer. Isn't that enough?" Grinding my teeth, I studied her face for a reaction. I wanted her to look sad, to get out the car and hug me, maybe even take me back home. I should’ve known better. As always, she still wore the same old knowing look. But this time it was laced with fury.
Furrowing my brow, I turned on my heel, stomping away. My heart beat slowly, and felt as heavy as lead in my chest. A raindrop landed on the tip of my nose, making me flinch. Gazing at the sky, I could now see that clouds had gathered above me for miles, painting the sky different shades of grey. It was definitely the welcoming party I'd been expecting. Shivering, I folded my arms into my chest, resting my hands in the nooks of my elbows. Sevearl more tiny raindrops joined the others, making a repetive beat as they drummed against my skin and clothing. Little rivers of water travelled down my skin, soaking through the thin cloth of my dress.
“I won’t give in.” I mumbled to myself with a doubtful reassurance. I tried to ignore the cold as my wet hair continuously dripped down my back, chilling my wet skin even more. Chills stabbed at my spine repetitively, and by now, I might not have been wearing clothes for all the cover they gave. The straps on my shoes dug into my heel, the pain numbed by the cold. I couldn’t stop thinking about how much I hated the chill of the wind as it tried to snatch my hair away, making it slap my face.
Ripping my shoes off of my feet, I stumbled as I threw them angrily away from me. It was a weak shot, landing only a metre away. It wasn’t as though I was amazing at throwing things, But I was pretty sure I'm usually better than that. A strong gust of wind pushed at me, and tripped over my own numb feet. I couldn't take it. I couldn’t stay out here in the rain while my mother sat in her car with the heater on. Groaning, I stormed over to the car, ripping the door open. She smiled at me knowingly, that little twinkle in her eyes shining. I glared furiously at the sky.
