The next day, when Tom arrived at school, he was pleasantly surprised to see his two new companions waiting happily outside for him. He quickly shifted his long bangs over his bruised eye— and injury that Tord has originally given him, though his father reinforced the black and blue mark.
Edd smiled widely and waved the small teen over. "Hey Tom!" Said teen froze at the prospect of being called out to so openly, and glanced around in fear for any menacing eyes watching him.
There were none.
He breathed out in cautious relief and quickly went to them. "Hey guys..!" He said nervously, scanning their faces for any signs of annoyance or disgust. He was not, in the least bit, used to having friends, and did not know how to act around them.
Matt smiled at him as well, although his bright smile could never match Edd's peppy and spirited grins. Tom weakly smiled back, the movement unnatural to his shadowed face.
Matt and Edd looked to each other with shining eyes at the small success. Edd spoke next, "So, are we going inside? Oooooooor are we gonna sit here and wait for the late bell?"
Tom jumped and shook himself from his scattered thoughts, and followed them tensely inside. This was it- the moment when Tord approached him and called him the names that matched his figure, and beat him up and laugh and his friends would be there too, and they would—
"Hey Tord!" Matt smiled and waved to the tall male, who's figure was made obvious by his red jacket, his torn jeans that bruised his gut, the crimson earrings that made themselves out in his eyes as he smirked down at Tom, his clean hands, nails painted black, that ripped into him and hurt him and—
His thoughts were interrupted as Tord merely smiled, waving back and making his way to the trio. Tom quivered in terror and waited, each second becoming hours.
Edd grinned his award-winning smiles once more, and hugged Tord. Tord spoke first between the two, "Hey, Edd! Run out of cola yet?" Edd giggles and shook his head. "You know I always plan for the worst!"
Tom was surprised; their heart-felt greetings felt normal and associated, as if they'd been doing it for years. He was ashamed at the flare of jealousy igniting within him, and quickly shook himself.
Tord's piercing silver eyes traveled to Matt, and then to Tom. He froze. " What is he doing here?" He asked, his voice not hostile enough to anger Edd or Matt, but just enough to show his dislike for the shy teen.
Tom opened his mouth, ready to apologize quickly and dart away, but Matt simply hugged him and looked to Tord. "He's our new friend!"
Tord worked his jaw, angry fire blazing in his eyes and he observed Tom. The red-clad male opened his mouth, but then closed it quickly.
Edd must have seen his unhappiness, as his eyes narrowed. "Tord, you are going to treat him like you would me or Matt. You got that?" Tord hesitated, then mumbled a quick agreement and turned away from Tom.
Matt smiled and glanced around the crowded hallway, his eyes landing on the shy, blue-clad teen. Edd and Tord were sharing a conversation of which Tom was unsure of, but he did not move closer to eavesdrop.
The bell suddenly rang, its clear and sharp sound alerting everyone and creating a bustling crowd of moving students. Matt turned and waved to Tord, then started ducking through the crowd to get ahead. Edd laughed one of his solid, bell-like laughs and followed, turning to wave at Tom and Tord.
Tom quivered and glances up at Tord, fear spiking his insides. If Tord wanted to hurt him, now was the best time— when Edd and Matt wouldn't find out.
The tall teen simply met his gaze and snorted. "Don't be scared. I don't bite." He grinned, his teeth showing in a half threat. "I actually care to attempt what my friends want me too; I bet you have no experience with that, Thomas?" He leered.
Tom's face flushed red in anger. "You know who's fault that is, commie?" He snapped, turning away before he could answer and darting away.
