“I'll find the places where you hide. I'll be the dawn on your worst night. The only thing left that I like. Yeah I would kill for you, that's right!”

Only an hour passed and Jacob has already sang loud enough for the whole country to hear.

“I'll put your poison in my veins. They say the best love is insane, yeah. I'll light your fire till my last day. I'll let your field’s burn around me, around me.” He tilted his head back and belted out a very high note. I admit his voice was quite impressive, but the fact that we were on a kill mission in the middle of their territory was not the right time. I saw his eyes open ready to sing the next line. Instantly, my hand shot up and slapped his cheek. The sound resonated throughout the trees and some crows flew out cawing.

“Sing one more line and I will kill you.” I glared down at him as he clutched his throbbing, red cheek.

“If that’s what you wanted. If that’s what you wanted.” He sang the next lines and I saw red. I formed a fist as I breathed in and out.

“You…” I swung at him, but in a split second he sprinted off.

“Ha! Take a joke why don’t you!” I saw him run to the dirt path up ahead that led to the town. The light hitting him in an awkward angle made him look like a little boy running to play tag. I couldn’t suppress myself from smiling a little at the fact that Jacob could still find joy in the worst of things.

“Kayla!” My head snapped up at his direction, and kept my eyes alert.

“Jacob!” I saw him waving his hands frantically as he jumped up and down. At that motion, I sprinted off at his jumping form. Through my peripheral view, I saw nothing but the calm lake and the fresh grass ready for spring, nothing near the threatening noise or view of werewolves. Finally, I arrived at where he stood, and searched his body to see any wound marks.

“Jacob. What’s happening?” I crept lower trying to find the enemy.

“Kayla! Look, there’s a soda pop stand! How come we don’t have one in our town?!” I saw him point at this old man passing out blue, cream soda bottles to the little kids in front of a Postal Office.

“You made me…come here…for this?” I slowly turned my head towards him. Jacob gulped loudly as he nervously yanked at his sweater.

“Uh- you see- I –uh” He slowly crept to the old man as I glared daggers at him.

“You What?”

“Uh-I-haha-funny-I really like-Hi good old man! Mind if I get two bottles for this handsome kind sir?” Jacob practically pushed all the kids out of the way just to get them, out of pure excitement. I stood to the side, alert and ready to kill either him or a werewolf. I mean, we were here to hunt not to have a picnic. Oh might as well invite my father too! I rolled my eyes at such a thought, and watched as he bent down to help a kid open a bottle. Jacob was kind, and a rare soul that I maybe started to warm up to. I slowly started to smile as he gave a little girl a piggy back ride. The girl’s blonde hair shook around her face as she screamed with pure delight, and I watched as Jacob’s face for the first time light up with joy. He started to make these weird airplane noises as he ran around the old man. The children ran through and around his legs as they clapped with joy. There was so much joy; joy that I never got to experience. Jacob looked my way, and frowned. He gently placed the little girl on the ground and gave her a quick kiss on the cheek making her blush from head to toe. Slowly he approached me with cautious steps, as his blue eyes searched my face.

“Why are you crying?” I snatched my fingers to my cheeks, and immediately came into contact with my moistened cheek.

“No I just got—“

“Yeah, let me guess, something in your eye. No really tell me.”

“I—“I frowned as I looked up at the bright, blue sky. “We can’t be doing this! I never stop. We should get going right now.” I brushed past him as I marched towards the pack house leaving behind the laughing children and the old man who sold the soda pops. Sadly, this might be the last we will ever see them. That thought disturbed me for some reason, but I quickly shook it away. I never should connect or come into contact with werewolves, it was too dangerous for me as a hunter.

“Hey Kayla?” Jacob’s gentle yet urgent voice encouraged me to walk faster to the pack house. Just a few steps away.

“Kayla.” His rough hands jerked my body against his hard chest as he clamped a hand over my mouth. “Don’t scream, but look over near the pack house porch.” His index finger shook violently as he pointed up to the high porch. I yanked his clammy hand off my face, and stared up.

“Jacob?”

“Yeah?”

“Run.”
