The day is finally here!! I can't believe Zeenat is getting married. She would always blabber about how much she wouldn't get a muslim husband because apparently they're too controlling but in the end she's the first to get hitched from our friend circle doing the opposite of what she planned. I still remember the conversation we had on the last day of campus.
....Flashback....
"Let's just celebrate. I hope our results get us a fine job. Let's toast to that at the restaurant, Zee?"
"I'm so not worried about it..."
"Yeah, why would you be...your family can just get you a job, y'all rich people."
"Hey, I didn't put in extra hours and bust my head to let nepotism take over. And speaking of my family, all they would talk about now is 'Time for Zeenat to get married'. I already told them, I'm a working class woman and that won't change for anyone and I won't get a control freak husband."
"So when's your next set up? I'm sure Aunt Mariam lined up some hotties for you..."
"Mom has the worst taste ever, kasam! (I swear oath.) Despite me telling her I'm not getting a Muslim man she still forces dates on me. Some are pretty hot...but psycho. Not interested until I get a good job with further notice."
"As long as you didn't say 'never'."
"I can't...sometimes things change. Allah knows that love is my religion."
....Present moment.....
I loved the way she hadn't settled for anyone less than what she deserved, that was always her mindset when it came to anything. So to speak, she had become my role model.
Just like that few months down the line, Zee was hooked onto this Sayed guy. Her mom's choice might've just got better because Sayed is a piece of hot art..and so are most of the Muslim guys she mentioned, she showed me all their pictures from facebook. I wished someone would organize for me too...
I was so happy for Zeenat, not only because she was getting a handsome husband that gave in to her demand list (her not changing her religion was a bonus she told me), her life has been set out for her so perfectly. In fact, I should envy her instead of being happy...but that's just me. I've never had an easy life like all my girl friends.
I was raised by a single a mother who did everything to make ends meet until she was diagnosed with T.B and died when I was in matric. That was the most difficult year of my life, I had to work to provide for myself ever since, even when I went to campus. Things were never easy for me and it still isn't.
When I met Zeenat my life took a 360 degree turn. Zeenat, Sia, Keerti, Julie & I have been besties since the first day of campus and it gives me great satisfaction that we've made it this far, somehow or the other trying to keep in touch. For the first time in my life I felt so important to people other than my mother.
Growing up I had no real friends because my mother and I always moved from place to place to accommodate our needs. Zeenat was there for me all the time. She would take me to lavish places when we were on holiday, bought me expensive clothes whenever we went shopping and the girls would take turns to have sleepovers at their grand mansions.
I felt really bad about being the only average cat in our group as I had to host my turn for the sleepovers at my small, rented apartment. I always took the opportunity to boast about my circumstances when the girls showed off but they've always been very supportive. I never took wrong advantage of them and still appreciate everyday we spent together back in campus.
Getting back to reality...I should go check if Zeenat is ready or not but I don't want anyone to see me just yet. I'm no bride but this outfit was really expensive, it's been the first expensive outfit I've been able to afford. After all it's my bestie's wedding, I had to leave no stone unturned. Anyways, I can't stay in this beautiful room forever.
