"Eid mubarak!!" Zee greeted when we were back yet again at the Siddiqui house for the celebration of Eid.
"Thanks! Same to you. You look lovely!!" I told Zee and she twirled in her anarkali gown.
I couldn't match up to her level of beauty. Still styled away at the occasion with a white and silver netted maxi dress. I wasn't sure to go traditional or not....so indo western it is.
Mariam: Do I have to see this bad luck girl's face on Eid too?
She wouldn't even have a smile on an auspicious day.
Jiyana: Eid Mubarak, Aunt Mariam.
She ignored me and continued to distribute snacks to the family. Junaid enters slyly.
Siddiqui uncle: So glad you could join us this year, Junaid.
Zee: Happy birthday bhai!!!
Zee runs to hug her brother despite knowing that he's not much of a hug person. But he smiled and accepted.
Junaid: Thank you. I'm here because Zee insisted and Jiyana would not let me live peacefully if she didn't meet Zee on Eid or celebrate my birthday. You will celebrate with us right...Mariam?
The tension in the room is thick as Junaid addresses his mom. She nodded and turned away. Somehow I sense guilt in Aunt Mariam's behaviour. I think Junaid should give her a chance.
Zee: Well, I have some gifts to give you all.
The family opens their gifts and all praise Zee for her good taste. I return to the kitchen to get more snacks when Aunt Mariam stops me.
"Is something wrong Aunt Mariam?"
"Jiyana, I know you for a long time. And I know my son-"
"If you really knew your son, you wouldn't have abandoned him aunt!!"
"How do you know that!!? That's not what happened! You have no right to interfere in our life or my son's life!!"
"I do have a right, aunt. I'm Junaid's wife-"
"If you want what's best for Junaid then you should know that he'll never be happy with you!! Didn't he treat you like shit!?"
"Aunt-"
Zee: Mom!! Why are doing this?!! What is your problem!!? Why do you keep pestering Jiyana!?
Mariam: Your brother hates her! If he treated you like that all along what makes you think that he'll change. After all he's a man. Once he gets tired of you he'll dump you himself. Zeenat, I am protecting your friend!!
Zee: You know nothing about protecting us!! In fact I saved Junaid bhai's marriage by-
We stall for her to complete what she says but she stopped midway thinking she's said too much.
Junaid: What are you talking about Zee?
Junaid had unfortunately heard the last bit of the conversation. She's immediately panicked even more. Junaid strides forward dangerously in her direction.
Junaid: What did you do?
Zee: Bhai...actually....
Jiyana: Zee, what do you mean?
Zee: I found your marriage certificate and purposely hid it when the lawyers came last time.
Zee drops a bomb to shock us all. Junaid furiously looks at her. Knowing his anger, I had to intervene.
