A/N: Inter-caste marriages are frowned upon in my country.

Malayali- A person who belongs to the Malayalam community.

Kannada- language spoken in the state of Karnataka, India.

To all my Malayalam friends please do not take offense. This is just to show the prejudice people have against any specific caste.

DIYA

Saying that I'm nervous is an understatement. I am terrified. My heart is beating miles a minute and I have half a mind of running back to my room and breaking things off with Aditya.

I remembered my conversation with my mother  2 weeks ago and it went something like this.

"Ma."  I said.

I think she felt something in my tone and she became serious and apprehensive, resolved to hear what I have to say and probably knowing what I had to say.

I cleared my throat and began, " I need to talk to you about something."

" Who is the guy?"  she asked, resigned.

I had chosen today to talk to her because my dad and brother were not at home and  this was the prime time to talk to her and keep her away from their influence.

I gulped and said, "His name is Aditya."

"What does he do?" She asked.

"He is the HR in my company." I answered.

Then comes the question she had been dying to ask. " Which caste does he belong to?"

"He is a malayali" I dropped the bomb.

" No, absolutely not. Not a mallu. Did you not find anybody else, except for a mallu. I would have accepted if it was someone else, but not a mallu!" she exclaimed.

"Ma, he doesn't behave like a typical malayali. He is nice. He has lived all over India as his dad was in army. Please, give him a chance."  I pleaded.

"Does he know kannada?"  She asked.

Oh crap. She is asking all the wrong questions!!! definitely not a good sign. I was expecting them, but damn!

"He can understand, but cannot speak." I said.

She sighed. "How do you expect us to communicate with him without having a common language. This is not going to work out. Forget about him."

"He is a really nice person and I am sure that I will be happy with him for the rest of my life. Isn't that enough? He is already learning Kannada and with time he will be able to speak. Please ma, atleast meet him once."  I said, earnestly.

She looked at me and said, " Okay. Let's decide when your father and brother come back home. If your brother is okay with this, then I don't have any objections."

My heart soared. I knew my mother would agree, but the real obstacle was my brother. Atleast she would help me convince him.

I was so freaking wrong. My dear mother had left me to face the big bad wolf all on my own. I hesitated for another second before I entered my brother's room.

He looked at my face and I knew he was enjoying tormenting me because he knew I had something important to discuss or rather ask his permission and he would happily say no,  the sadist that he is. He had already prepared his answer before hearing me out.

" What do you want now?" He asked.

"Iwanttomarrymyboyfriend." I rushed all the words into one.

"What?" He asked, confused.

I took a deep breath and said, " I have a boyfriend and I want to get married to him."

There was silence. Lots and Lots of silence. Any moment now he would burst out and yell at me or strangle me.

He did neither. He finally asked, " Does this boyfriend of yours have a name? What does he do?"

I looked at him, shocked. This mature response was not what I had expected. Did an alien take over his body?

" His name is Aditya. He is the HR of my company." I stammered.

" If he is the HR couldn't you have gotten a raise in pay." he said and started laughing at his bad joke.

I looked at my brother to see if he had grown two heads. So not what I was expecting.

" What do mom and dad think about this?" He asked.

" I haven't spoken to dad yet."  I said.

" Let's discuss this as a family." He said and called my parents into the room and the entire biodata of my boyfriend was laid out.

All the three members of my family were exchanging looks and I was getting tensed.

"So," I said, clearing my throat.

" I need a drink." My dad said and continued dramatically, " I didn't expect this from my daughter. How am I going to face the people in the village?"

"Dad. This is about my happiness. Can you please think about this?" I pleaded.

" She is taking advantage of the fact that you cannot say no to her, dad." my brother piped in and continued, " How do you expect us to agree to this, Diya? You guys belong to two different communities and not to mention different social status."

"Why don't you all meet him and then decide. His parents have agreed to our marriage, already." I said.

"I am not in a position to tell you that all this is nonsense because I was in your shoes not a few months back. Mom, dad what do you think?" He asked.

My dad made a face and said, " I cannot say no to her. Fine, let's meet the boy atleast."

"I had so many plans for your marriage. Now, I see that all those things are never going to be fulfilled.  Anyways, let's meet the boy." Mom said.

I was partially happy that they agreed, but part of me broke that their heart was not into it. I will make sure they will not regret this decision.

A/N: Diya managed to get her family to agree to this marriage with little effort than she had expected.

Do you think things will be smooth after this or will catastrophes occur every time both the families meet?

stay tuned
