Once there was two races, Monsters and Humans both with their own abilities. The Humans could manipulate almost any material into a weapon for defence or attack and a large amount of the Monsters could turn into nonstop killing machines.
Unfortunately, for the Monsters, few could fully control their Feral forms and none could remember much of their time in that state. This made them incredibly dangerous as it was impossible to predict when they were going to change.
W.D Gaster and his brother Gill were part of an experiment to help the monsters control this form. However this was only successfull on one trial and it was to dangerous to try again. The experiments badly effected Gaster's Feral side and made it into a unstoppable killing machine with a constant lust for blood.
During a celelabration for the royal family of the Humans, Gill was unable to stop Gaster from shifting into his Feral form, killing several tons of people including the King and Prince of Humans.
In her rage at her loved ones death, the human queen started a war with the monsters. The monsters were unprepared and easily defeated. After the war they were given seven days to make it to Mount Ebbot were they would be sealed underground. To most this better was the option and the only one that didn't end in death.
Only a third of the monsters made it and the rest began to group together and disappear into the wilderness to hide from the humans.
The human Queen ordered for all remaining monsters to be found and imprisoned except for Gaster and this family who would be brought to her for execution. She wanted him to know what it felt like to lose those you care about.
Gaster' s family was shunned by the other monsters because of the war and a fire monster, Grillby, found this incredibly unfair.
Grillby started helping them but was found out by his group of monsters. He was considered a traitor and they tried to kill him until Gaster showed up and protected him.
Gaster let Grillby stay with him and his group as they were good friends and it was the least he could do to pay back what Grillby had done for him.
