The Mistake

Drew.

"And then, he was all like, "you either love me already, or you're beginning to love me" I mimicked in my best 'Jacob' voice. It was a quiet, average Thursday afternoon. Felicity, my best friend, who i had kept informed about the letters, was walking beside me, through the halls of our school.

I was struggling to carry all the books and binders in my hand. I had been so busy writing those letters with complete thought and consideration, that I had completely forgotten about all the assignments and projects that I had due today. As I explained the rest of the laughter, Felicty took half of my book pile from my hands, and held them expertly in her left arm, crooked under her armpit.

Felicity burst out laughing, putting her free hand over her mouth when other students gave her a second glance "Oh My Gosh. That is the funniest thing I've heard this whole week! These letters should become, like, part of a book, or something!"

"Right? It's funny how-" I stopped mid sentence when i spotted Jacob leaning against some person's locker. His friends were behind him, making jokes and having a conversation amongst themselves.

Apparently, that 'some person' was Miranda Parker, a girl who I had seen around the school, but had never talked to. She was standing close to Jacob, a little too close if you ask me, and she was dramatically batting her eyelashes at him.

But something was different.

He looked completely disinterested in whatever topic she had brought up. It was like he was hearing her, but he wasn't really listening to her. Miranda hadn't noticed, though, and continued to babble on.

Suddenly, Miranda had decided to lean in for a quick kiss from Jacob, but he quickly dodged with a step back, and she ended up kissing the air that was now thick with tension and rejection. His friends had noticed his dodge too, and they had stopped their conversation, to see what was happening.

Felicity glsnced at me, and I just shrugged. This was super weird.

Poor Miranda looked shocked, and like she wanted to cry. For a split second, I felt bad for her, but then I took it back. I mean, in a way, it was her own fault. You just couldn't trust Jacob.

"So, Miranda what do you think of me?" Jacob asked, casually "Anything along the lines of a dirty, sexist, shallow-minded pig?"

Miranda gasped over dramatically, making Felicity scoff and roll her eyes "I would never call you anything like that! Where is this stuff coming from?!"

Jacob sneered and pushed away from her locker "Feed someone else your fucking lies. I know it's you that's sending me those stupid letters that I couldn't care less about. Fess up"

My eyes flew to Felicty. My heart was beating faster, and I suddenly felt like I was going to throw up. I didn't think he was going to chase after every girl in this school and accuse them, just because he wanted to find out who had written the letters. I hadn't even thought about what would happen if he had somehow caught me in the act of sending him those damn letters.

Felcity glanced at me and put a hand on my shoulder. Stay Calm, her eyes were practically screaming at me.

This is not how the tale was supposed to go. I would land in hot water because of those letters.

The pile of papers, binders and textbooks grew heavier in my hand, threatening to weigh me down to the cold, hard ground. If Jacob was questioning Miranda, a girl who had no kind of connection to my letters, no doubt he would start to suspect and accuse other girls in the school as well.

How long before he got to me?

"Eric, saw you slip a piece of paper into my locker, after school hours" Jacob gestured to one of the boys behind him, who narrowed his eyes at her "Would you like to explain, Miranda?"

Felicty gripped my wrist with her free hand and pulled me closer to her, so she could whisper into my ear "Ok, listen. Let's walk past them, calmly to our homeroom class. Make it subtle, alright? It'll be alright. Just stay calm, and you'll basically fly under the radar"

I nodded, because my voice had suddenly failed me. Felicty patted my back, trying-and failing-to reassure me. She gestured for me to walk in front of her.

"Go" Felicty urged me. I demanded my legs, which now felt like jelly, to move. I kept my chin up high, and the large pile of paper/binders/textbooks in my arms, against my chest. Slowly, Felicty and I were gliding across the halls, and when we had almost successfully past the couple that was Jacob and Miranda, I couldn't help but grin and slide my hand against my foreheard to wipe away the sweat.

That's when it happened.

That's when my arms gave away to the large pile of homework that I had been carrying.

I could hear Felicty gasp behind me as we both witnessed everything in my arms giving away, to the force that was gravity.

First it was the two textbooks that I had used as a base for all the loose papers that I had been carrying. The textbooks fell to the ground, and projected a loud 'thump' sound that caught everyone's attention. Then it was the loose papers, that glided throuh the air for a good 7 seconds before scattering on the floor, in front of Miranda, the group of boys and worst of all-Jacob.

The binders were light, and so they didn't create as much of a sound as the textbooks did. It landed in front of my feet, the cover was open, and I could clearly see the recent notes I had took in Chemistry.

In the blink of an eye, Felicty and I were on our knees, collecting everything that I had dropped on the floor.

It was my worst nightmare. A few people had ignored us, and had already gotten back to what they were doing before. All except Jacob. And Miranda. Perfect.

"Get the papers" Felicty hissed as she gripped the binder. The papers that had scattered in front of Miranda and Jacob. Shit.

"I'm going" I hissed back, grabbing a textbook and  crawling on my knees towars the mess of scattered papers. Miranda was smirking at me, and I was too nervous to lift my head up and see what Jacobs expression was.

If he had good eyesight and good memory  he would see that the writing on the papers, clearly matched the writing on the letters that he had received. I crossed my fingers and prayed to God that he wouldn't care.

Please, for once in your life. Don't care. Please, please please!

As i snatched the papers up, I cursed myself and my stupid clumsiness. This was the worst, possible thing, that could happen right now.

I had almost snatched up majority of the papers that had been dropped. Just a few more.

While I was reaching for a paper full of vocab near Felicty's ankle, out of the corner of my eye, I saw Jacob crouch down to a piece of paper that was near his feet.

My head snapped towards him and a hand flew to my mouth. Oh my God. Oh my God.

"Shit" Felicty said under her breathe, her hand absentmindedly reaching for my hand. I knew I had messed up. This was on me. This was my fault.

Jacob had picked up the piece of lined paper. He stared down at it, and I could feel sweat starting to form at my forehead. His eyes were blank, and I couldn't pick up any emotion on his face. Miranda narrowed her eyes at the paper, while the boys just stared on in confusion.

"Oh no" Felicty gripped my hand so hard, that her knuckles had turned white.

He turned it around once and I bit my lip. Maybe I should just come clean. Maybe that's the best option here. I'm tired of the suspense.

Jacob looked up and his eyes met mine.

That's when I knew.

I had made a big mistake.
