"So, what do you think?" Bianca's voice trails over as she gazes at her reflection in the mirror. Sliding her hands down her body, she eyes herself with praise and confidence and she knows that the purple, cocktail dress that graceously moulds into her curves is the right fit.
I yawn, strenching my arms up into the air. "Yes, B. It's great." I am clearly just saying that out of boredom. It is Thursday and Bianca demanded that we went shopping after her half day of classes, so we spent nearly three hours in a shopping department in Mahattan trying on slutting dresses and receiving disapproving looks from the elderly.
"You have said that about the last five dresses, though." She wines, glancing at her figure once more in the mirror. "But you are right, though." She smiles at me through the mirror in glee, spinning around to face me. " Should I buy."
"Sure." I say little more enthusiastically. "Why not? But we have to meet my father in ten minutes at the food court." Bianca's family always had money. One of the wealthiest families in all of Chicago, if Bianca or Liam wanted something, their father would surely pay for it without another word said. Both brought up on proper manners and grace, they could easily charm their way through purchasing something without spending a penny. It is kind of funny to watch.
"Of course." She cheers, zipping down the dress to show her slim body. She pulls on her jeans and t-shirt as she adds. " I wouldn't miss seeing your dad for the world." For some strange reason, Bianca and Liam love hanging out with my father. I remember when I was younger I use to get jealous and thought the liked hanging out with him more than me. They said it was because their parents were boring and my dad was young. I just found, no find, the whole situation embarrassing.
The food court is spaceous, clean and clinical, yet is full of people at lunch hour. Bianca and I trail bags beside us as we search for my father. It doesn't take long to spot him over beside the railing, his eyes furiously examining the paper with furrow brows.
"Hey, Ray," Bianca's voice calls over every other, catching the attention of my father who looks up and smiles at us. Bianca is in the led, speeding ahead with an all-white smile plastered on her face.
My dad jumps up, grinning and waving at us as we edge closer to him. He stands out like a sore thump.Among the clean and professional businessmen and women, my father wears faded dungarees that are stained from oil and other liquids that come from cars when being a mechanic. His dirty blonde hair, the exact same shade as mine, is fixated in many directions and his face is patted with dust and dirt. Still, he remains as handsome as he ever was.
"Hey, girls," He smiles warmly, receiving Bianca's hug as tightens her grip around him. "How are ye?"
"We're good, Dad." I say, hugging him around the neck.
"It's good to see you, Pet." He whispers in my ear and his Northern Irish accent causes my heart to break with the memories of my old life. Everything is changing, but the people are still the same. That won't last for long.
"Where's Liam?" Dad frowns as he glances between the both of us. He has always had a soft spot for Liam, ever since they bonded over European soccer and he helped Liam with coming out to his parents when he thought it was the most difficult thing to do.
"He has some boy trouble." Bianca rolls her eyes from the top of the menu board. " But when doesn't him have boy troubles." Bianca adds a little giggle and we join in.
"I hope everything will be alright." My dad says distantly, micmicking Bianca's movement as he dives into the menu. "So, what do you girls want?"
Over three nacho meals and three diet cokes, we dive into a fun conversation with my father staring off the round. Dad tells us all about his time about work and about how he met a famous people from a TV show that he can't remember the name off. He is enjoying were he is living, but what's to move more into the city . "To be nearer to work." He clarifies when I give him the "Back-off" look. Dad says that he is working with nice, genuine people and that, even though the pay is shit, he wouldn't trade his job for the world now.
