Chapter 2

___________________________

It took a few days after Dad’s news for it to sink in. I was moving to America, I was leaving everything behind. My friends, my home, all for Dad’s stupid dream.

‘This is ridiculous! You can’t just leave, we have plans man. You can’t leave us.’ My friend Luke fumed.

‘Yeah!  What happened to doing nothing all summer except eating peanut M&M’s in bed?’ My other friend Roisin added in.

I sunk lower in the bean bag that I had in the corner of my room. I had only told my friends I was leaving today, hence why they were currently in my room shouting at me.

‘It’s not like I want to leave, but Dad’s already made up his mind. I’m leaving’ I mumble looking down at my hands.

Luke sinks down on my bed and sighs. He looks with me with sadness in his eyes. I’ve known Luke since Junior Infants; he was that goofy boy that always made you smile. I was going to miss him.

‘I know! You could live with me; you know the O’Connell’s are great fun!’ Roisin exclaimed throwing her hands in the air.

I breathed a laugh; I had met Roisin in secondary. I hadn’t known her as long as Luke, but she was like the sister I never had. They both were considered family.

‘Roisin I don’t think Rory would appreciate me eating all his Cheerio’s.’ I replied, Rory was Roisins younger brother that had an unhealthy obsession with Cheerio’s. And man was he possessive over them, I had one bowel. One! And he nearly stabbed me with a butter knife.

She sat on the floor looking defeated.

‘I’ll move back when schools over I swear, you know how much I want to go to Trinity College.’ I said hoping to lift the heavy sadness that was surrounding us.

It was true what I said, I’ve always wanted to go to Trinity ever since I found my Mam went there for her writing degree.

‘Yeah! And there’s always skype!’ Luke added in, looking happier than he was.

I smiled at him, he was right. Maybe moving wouldn’t be that bad, I mean I’ve always wanted to go to America.

‘It’s still not fair’ Roisin grumbled. ‘Why does Ari get all the hot American boys?’

At this I laughed, and Luke chuckled. ‘Don’t worry Roisin, I’ll package one up and send him to you.’

After a few minutes of talk about American boys, Roisin asks;

‘How is Levi dealing with all this?’

I bite my lip; it would be tough on Levi moving. I mean it was hard on me, but I wasn’t leaving the ‘love of my life’. I rolled my eyes at that, love at 16. Who knew it wasn’t only in movies?

‘He’s… Okay. The not leaving his room and not talking to my dad kind of okay.’

Luke and Roisin both had looks of understanding on their faces; they had seen how Levi was like with Rebecca. They truly did love eachother.

‘Tell him not to worry, I’ll keep an eye on his girl’ Luke winks.

I shake my head laughing, I’m sure that would do quite the opposite than not worrying Levi .

Luke was a good looking lad; he had soft blue eyes and dark brown hair. He had a teddy bear feel to him and most girls he ‘kept his eye on’ he ended up screwing them.

I knew he would never do that to Levi though, he as close to him as he is to me. And I’m pretty sure Rebecca would punch him in that ‘area’ if he tried anything.

‘Keep it in your SpongeBob boxers, kay Luke?’ Roisin said while rolling her eyes.

Roisin had, had a crush on Luke since she met him. To be honest I couldn’t blame her, I just never saw Luke in that way. Roisin was beautiful by the way; she had green eyes and bright red hair. She got the attention of many boys, but only had eyes for Luke. Just Lukes only had eyes for other girls.

Maybe they’ll get together while I’m absent. I wouldn’t have to third wheel when I was away if that was the case.

‘When are you leaving exactly Ari?’ Roisin said, propping up on her elbow from her lying position.

‘Urmmm... 3 days?’ I said with an innocent smile.
