"Liam can't find the right words to describe how he's feeling. He thinks, maybe, if he pinches himself like some sort of damn movie that he'll wake up from the nightmare and she'll be softly snoring beside him. That he'll be able to fall peacefully back to sleep knowing she's dreaming of jumping sheep or her dog Stanley fetching a tennis ball. Only...this isn't a dream, and she's not going to wake up.
She's dead. His best friend, gone. Like the snap of a finger or the blink of an eye. Life gave him a big fuck you and laughed directly in his face. Because, now, life isn't going to be as easy as breathing. Life will be taken one step at a time, each movement more conscious than the others, and he'll have to remind himself to keep going each and every day.
That is how he can survive a day — a lifetime — without Kenny De Luca (only, he can't)."
