“Hi Ross!” she greets me. “I’m Sophia Lynn Moret! I’m a huge fan of yours! I’m the lead singer for Line Drive! Since we have a show tonight and we haven’t officially met, I came over to introduce myself!”
This red headed girl talks like the period key on her laptop broke so she has to end every sentence in an exclamation point. I’m in a bad mood. You do the math. Things are going to get ugly fast. Taking out my anger on Hannah by flipping out on my family and our opening band is a bad, bad idea. But it’s one I can’t stop.
It’s almost as if I’m having an out of body experience when I laugh and ignore the hand Sophia has held out for me to shake. “Do you always refer to yourself by your full name?”
Her smile fades just a little bit. Anyone not looking to see her demeanor crash would hardly notice the change. “No, because that’s not my full name. My middle name is Rachel.”
I laugh again. “So your name is Sophia Lynn? Did your parents hate you or something? Why would they give you two first names?”
“Ross!” my sister says. It’s a good thing our parents are asleep in the back room and Riker and Ryland went inside the gas station to get snacks, because if they heard me right now they would slap me and feed me soap.
Sophia Lynn’s smile goes from perky to tight. “It’s okay, Rydel,” she says, exaggerating my sister’s name to point out that it’s pretty strange too. “I was named after my grandmothers. My parents didn’t want to have to choose just one of their mothers, so they paid homage to both.” She waits for me to respond with an apology or at least an acknowledgement of some kind. When I don’t, she says, ”I’ve heard nothing but good things about you, Mr. Lynch. It’s a shame to find out I’ve been lied to.”
Another sinister laugh escapes my lips. My brother Rocky puts his hand on my shoulder and tries to pull me back towards the bunk area of the bus. Ellington watches hopelessly from the couch. “He’s usually not so rude,” Rocky starts to explain, but I cut him off. “He’s right, I usually have a filter, but I’ve lost the ability to care.”
I take a step towards Sophia Lynn. “So, you’re a ginger?”
She holds up a strand of her hair and takes a second to exam it as if she’s never seen her own hair before. “So it seems.”
“You know what they say about gingers,” I smirk. “They have no souls.”
For some reason this breaks her and tears cloud her eyes. “The only one here without a soul is you,” she says before turning around and running off of our bus. Good. I don’t like perky red heads anyway.
