Lance slept most of the next day and then still with some unwillingness in his heart got ready and headed back to the lab. Once he'd turned 13 he was often taken to the lab for a few tests, mostly due to the doctors wanting to see what effect puberty had on him. It was then that they'd realized he was able to track Deltas by their scent. Due to their powerful pheromones Deltas gave off a very strong virulent smell when they became violent or exited. Average people wouldn't be able to tell if a person is acting in a questionable manner because they happen to be criminals or if they act that way because they are Delta following their instincts. Eventually he volunteered to deal with them. There were already several task forces contracted by the lab that dealt with that but were not very successful, they were unable to track them down as well as he could and lacked the physical prowess to reduce them if it came to that. He was given permission on the condition that there should always be a support team nearby in case things became too hard to handle for him.
He knew quite well that other than his parents everyone else only thought of him as a test subject still in the process of being deemed as successful or failure. He was going hunting because he wished to be given the approval of the scientists. Despite his parent's feelings he was still technically "lab property" if they were not sufficiently convinced that he had grown up well they could still choose to "terminate" the experiment. It wasn't rare he had seen it many times already.
The lab's target was to modify the Delta gene, making it possible to coexist with average humans. Since it was a species that had naturally evolved it was impossible to wipe it out, all that could be done was to tamper with it. Thus they had make many experiments for that goal. It often had to do with weakening the Delta gene to an extent. However such a thing was easier said than done. The results of most of those experiments were actually defective subjects. Those beings, usually named "Gamma" were often too weak to live and died in infancy. Those that survived had very slender bodies that couldn't gain any muscle and couldn't put up with any physical exertion. Most of those unfortunate children were terminated at once. However they had found out by chance that the Deltas seemed to be insanely attracted to the Gammas. In one case they had accidentally left a Gamma with a Delta. The pitiful Gamma had been ravished savagedly until death. It was since then that they realized that Gammas held a strange attraction for Deltas albeit to their misfortune. Since then they had began tampering with Gammas as well, perhaps they hoped that if they were able to stabilize Gammas then eventually they would be able to reproduce giving birth to an ideal new specimen.
The matter of Gammas was something that still haunted him, because he had known of quite a few Gammas that had suffered that sort of unfortunate fate. Back when Lance had been little, before he was deemed as a success he had often been kept in the same area as the gamma. While he was in the same area he was not in the same room with them, but those holding rooms had doors made of transparent material so he could look at the hall. Most of them were older than he was and every now and then he saw as the lab employees took some of those Gamma away. Those workers and the scientists didn't really thought much of them so they didn't care if they were overheard as they spoke of taking them to the Deltas. But none of those that were sent there ever returned. And all that those people chattered afterwards was something like "It didn't work out again huh, too bad. Maybe next time" He especially remembered how one of the Delta had smiled at him as he was being taken away. It was all the interaction there ever was between them, but it had been the first time someone had ever smiled at him. He couldn't comprehend then what a smile ment, he only knew the serious and cold faces of the adults or the angry and savage faces of the Delta. Despite that, he never forgot that smile.

After a while he went back to the lab to find out how the boy he'd brought back was doing and about his next mission. The researches were all in a meeting so he wandered around a bit. While lost in his thoughts he was suddenly hit by a heavy scent. Unexpectedly he had wandered off to the area were the Gamma were kept. One or a few of them were probably in heat. The Gamma had been modified to make them more attractive to Deltas, but the result was rather troublesome. Although they became fertile they became way more fertile than what was expected. Both male and females were in theory capable of getting pregnant but so far many of them died in infancy or as teens, they also died often when they were held by Deltas since they were roughly treated and often killed by them, it was rare for Gammas to reach adulthood even when they were properly cared for and artificial insemination didn't seem to work on them. And even when they managed to survive the rough handling of the Deltas during mating at least in this particular lab so far none had managed to bring a pregnancy to full term.
-Shit, this smell! Ah I'm so stupid - Lance felt dizzy, it was an overwhelming smell, he felt himself getting hard and his self control slipping quickly. He held his breath and ran away as fast as he could. After managing to leave the area he nearly fainted. When he was little he wasn't affected by it, it also didn't seem to upset the betas, but after he'd reached puberty he found out that it had a very adverse effect in him. It was a nauseously sweet smell, like rotting flowers, he hated it but his body had a strong reaction to it. He went to a nearby restroom to take care of his arousal while cursing his mistake. After taking care of it he waited near the conference room for the researchers to appear.
It took quite some time but finally they came out, they were holding documents and discussing things among themselves. It was then that his dad noticed he was there.
"Lance! son, I thought you would take some time off, yet here you are! " he sighed in a resigned tone.
"Dad, well I wanted to know about the irregularity that appeared in my mission the last time" Lance said, straight to the point. As they were speaking another researcher approached them.
"Well, if it isn't little Lance, ever so diligent huh!" Professor Jones smiled at the teen. Although initially he had been a bit reluctant in acknowledging the boy's abilities to help their research, in time the boy had grown on him.
"Profesor Jones, well I'm already 18, I'm not "little" anymore" Lance frowned, in fact he was 5'9 so it was alright for his age, he could still grow quite a bit but it was his pet peeve the wish to grow tall to look cool as an adult so he rather disliked being addressed as "little", that said he respected the old man because he'd been his father's mentor.
"You'll always be "little Lance" for me, even when you get old and gray. I'm old, even your dad is a little kid to me hahaha" Profesor Jones seemed to be in a good mood, lately he had been in a rather pensive aloof mood, but today he seemed quite pleased with himself.
"Professor, you seem to be in a good mood, did something good happen?" Lance smiled and inquired about the research. Although he himself wasn't officially an investigator he was credited as a field operative that obtains valuable samples and subjects and was also a valuable subject himself so he had relative clearance in such matters.
"Well, it's something we found out about the child you brought recently..."
