Milli stared out the window as the rain kissed the glass. Her tired eyes looking at the clouds that seemed to be getting darker with every moment her eyes glanced over them.
There was no reason to be holed up inside. In fact, Milli had plans to be at a café with some of her friends, who were now blowing up her phone asking where she was and if she was okay. She had been ignoring it for about five minutes now. She was beginning to feel bad about it, so she finally told her friends that she was caught up in the rain and lost track of time. "I'm on my way" she mumbles to herself, afraid of what might happen now that she's late.
Now, her friends were good people, but the one person she was worried about was her boyfriend of two years. The first year started like a dream; he took her to nice places, they were the "cute" couple that people adored. But things started taking a turn after about 10 months. They would go out to bars or clubs where people would stare, but Milli and her boyfriend, Dominic, didn't care. They were young adults. Young and stupid adults.
After the first time they decided to go to a bar, Milli stopped drinking completely. She became afraid of what she might become. She used to get a little tipsy for "fun" in high school, but after seeing what it does to Dominic, she was sobered up almost instantly.
Of course , Dominic was the complete opposite. Getting drunk was like his second nature. Which led to him hitting Milli in a 'blind' rage whenever she tried to get him to stop, or help him get out of the bar. Soon enough it went from Dominic hitting Milli when he was drunk, to hitting Milli when he was sober too. Any little thing that he felt Milli did wrong, another slap to the face, punch to the arm or gut, and getting kicked in the back while she writhes in pain and shock.
*flash back*
"Hey baby? Do you know where the last beer went?" Dominic yelled from the kitchen, searching the fridge for the caramel colored poison.
"Dom, you drank it last night" Milli said back , gently hoping to not anger her boyfriend with the news.
"Bullshit!" He screamed suddenly. "You drank it, didn't you?"
"Dominic, no! You know I don't even drink" Milli whimpered, treading water carefully.
"Right. You don't drink." He scoffed. "I would have remembered drinking something like that."
"Dom, come on, please. Don't do this." Milli was beginning to shy away, hoping she wouldn't get hurt again.
He's drunk. He took off after downing the last beer can that he chilled in the fridge only to buy more and drink them all.
"Don't fucking do what Milli? Fucking tell the truth? You know what , I'm so done with your lying bullshit." He hollered. He was pissed.
*smack*
He slapped Milli across the face, fuming.
She held her hand to her face as the sting started to set in. He grabbed her wrist harshly and slammed her body to the floor , and began kicking her in the side continuously.
After what felt like an agonizing eternity , he backed off.
"That's what you get you lying whore. Fucking buy your own beer next time" he stumbled over his words, the excess amounts of liquor catching up to him.
He grabbed for his keys and left the shared apartment , slamming the door on the way out and driving away.
'For even more alcohol' Milli guessed as she called a friend asking to stay the night. Of course, not daring mention Dominic, in fear he'd do something worse.
*flashback end*
Milli tried to shake the lingering memory out of her head. She didn't really feel like remembering something like that right now.
The rain was hitting the ground hard , and now it was hitting Milli's dark hoodie that she had pulled up over her head due to lack of an umbrella. The air was dense and smelled of petrichor. Her black high cut shoes were getting wet as she jogged slowly over to the café her friends and Dominic resided.
"Hey! Milli!" One of her close friends, Danny, called from the doorway of the café.
It brought a small smile to her face. What made her smile bigger was the fact that Dominic wasn't there.
"Hey! Danny!" Milli started "ah , do you know where Dom is?"
"Oh him? He left us to go drink a while ago." Danny said with the annoyance ebbing into his tone softly. Like watching a drop of food coloring slowly disperse into a cup of water.
"Drinking..? Again?" Milli mumbled more to herself than Danny, her tone laced with fear.
Danny had noticed how her voice had quivered at the mention of Dominic going out to drink yet again, he noticed it all the time. Just like he noticed how she would be more careful around Dominic, she would agree with whatever he said, follow whatever he requested. Danny was sure that something was up, and purposely wanted to invite the two, including some close friends, to the café to try to see what was wrong. Although Dominic left, leaving it to just Milli, Danny, and two of their other friends, who were currently ordering drinks in the long line of people sheltering from the rain.
"Hey... Milli?" Danny started. "You know, I've kinda noticed how you seem to be afraid of Dominic? Is there something up?"
"No! No, why would there be anything wrong?" Milli became defensive.
"Milli, come on. I know there's something going on. You can trust me. Please, we've all been really worried about you." Danny asserted softly. It was quite clear that Dominic wasn't treating Milli the greatest. And Danny felt like shit for ignoring it all this time just trying to tell himself it was fine. He knew that prying like this wasn't the best thing to do, but if Dominic was hurting Milli, he needed to know.
"You know what, fine." Milli said in defeat. Tears were starting to brim her eyes. Danny grabbed her hands to reassure her that it was going to be alright, although he knew the gesture wouldn't do much at all to help. Milli appreciated the comfort either way.
"Dominic... he's been hitting me." She started "and punching, and kicking, and yelling." She stammered. Afraid of the words that were coming out of her mouth, wishing she didn't have to accept them.
Danny wrapped his arms around her tightly, but gently all the same. She was crying and trying to deny it in her head that her relationship had been abusive for 14 months.
"That bastard..." Danny whispered to himself, but Milli heard it. "Please, let me help you out of this whole thing." Danny said into her shoulder. "How?" Milli sobbed. "He'd only come after you, too..." she trailed off into tears. "I'll get a restraining order, I'll get him locked up. Hell, I'd take you , Kathrine, and Jayce and move out of town if we had to." He said gently, his last remark dancing on the line of a joke. But they both knew that he would be completely willing to jump and leave everything just to keep Milli safe and away from all the abuse. "You know we can't do that Danny. We would run out of money eventually. And we aren't in the most stable of situations as it is." Milli replied, with a sad laugh weaving its way into her words. "I know. I know..." Danny trailed off. Milli was the first to break away from the hug, wiping her eyes with her sleeve. She felt relieved that she could tell someone about this, but scared that she still didn't know what to do. "Don't worry though. Really." Danny stated. "What?" She asked in response. "I mean, don't worry about Dominic. I'll take care of it. Trust me. I'm promising you that you won't have to deal with that for too much longer." He said with a melancholy confidence. "Wait, do you mean I'll have to go back home to Dominic again?" Milli asked, fearfully. "You could stay with me, Kathrine and Jayce?" He suggested. "Really?" She started. He nodded back. "Thanks Danny." She ended.
Milli really didn't want to go back home to her drunken boyfriend again. She'd already thought about moving back with her parents, but that was way out of town, and she'd never get to see her other friends again. She was sick of living in constant turmoil and pain, but was always too afraid to stop it. At least opening up to Danny was a start. Dominic my not be out of her life completely, but at least now Milli has the chance to remove him from it.————————————————————————
