Welcome! Spending time in God's Word has never been more important! In the past, I have tended to randomly sample many books of the Bible in my studies. I have read through God's Word quite quickly getting a general sense of His story and lingered over the parts I liked best. Recently I have felt challenged to read through the Word and take more time to drink from this wonderful fountain of life and ask God to open my eyes to see His amazing light. I am quite excited as I start today as I know that God can show me new things even in the most familiar passages!
Beginning something new can be quite daunting! We probably all have memories of beginning school or beginning a new job but have you ever thought about how God began our world? Many people argue that it came about with a 'Big Bang' or perhaps has always been in existence. The Bible gives a clear account of all we really need to know about how it happened.
Have you ever thought about what the first day was like? What was there? Who was there? God has allowed us a glimpse of that special day as we open the Bible to the very first book, Genesis:
"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters. Then God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. And God saw that the light was good. Then he separated the light from the darkness. God called the light "day" and the darkness "night." And evening passed and morning came, marking the first day."
Genesis 1:1-5 NLTSo God was there at the very beginning, God the Father, Spirit and Son:
"In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. He existed in the beginning with God. God created everything through him, and nothing was created except through him. The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it."
John 1:1-5 NLTWe see that Jesus was the Word as we continue reading in the book of John:
"So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father's one and only Son."
John 1:14 NLTSo now we know who was there but what was it like? There were deep waters and it was dark —until God spoke and then there was light! His Word of life brought light to everyone! This light and life changed everything and is still impacting everything today!
Prayer:
Thank You God for revealing the secrets of how this amazing world came into existence, in Your inspired Word of truth, the Bible. Thank You that You were there before the beginning of time and chose to give us light and life. I am so thankful that I can talk to You, the almighty Creator of the heavens and the earth! Thank You that when I consider all You have made, I can come to You with confidence, knowing that any issues I have are small in comparison to You. Thank You that in Your Word, I can definitely find answers, comfort, peace and a whole lot more!"I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago. I will consider all your works and meditate on all your mighty deeds.""
Psalm 77:11-12 NIVBless me as I meet with brothers and sisters from all over the world to remember Your deeds and miracles as I look at Your mighty works, knowing that You are the same yesterday, today and forever! (Hebrews 13:8)
In Jesus' Name,
Amen."For you are the fountain of life, the light by which we see."
Psalms 36:9 NLTAUTHOR'S NOTE:
Thank you for joining me for 'Light and Life for Today'. I plan to regularly add new chapters and hope that you will be blessed as we join around God's Word together and pray. I don't want to skip through the Bible just reading the bits that are easy to understand as God's Words reminds us:
"All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." 2 Timothy 3:16-17 NIV
We need to pray that God will help us to understand and that He would show us something new that we need to know and put into practice. The wonderful thing is that as we continue to revisit each book of the Bible over the course of our lives, God brings new understanding and reveals just what we need for where we are and for where He is taking us in the future.
I would love to hear from you as we make this journey through life. Feel free to leave a comment and let me know how God's Word is blessing you!
Note: This devotional will take longer to read than your typical devotional as we are taking a larger chunk of Scripture and actually studying it, so set aside some special time to meet with the Lord, away from the distractions of your day.
