A shiver ran down her spine as the cool wind danced along her heated skin. Shivering, she wrapped her arms around her body as an attempt to keep in as much body heat as possible. Another whisper of a breeze caressed her skin, her curled hair brushing off her shoulders.
The feeling of the cool breeze calmed her, creating a calm atmosphere in order for her to calm down and clear her head. Inside was where all of the guests gathered to celebrate the new moon in their expensive gowns and tuxedos, showing off to one another the wealth they carried in their name.
She could hear the faint sounds of champagne glasses clinking, guests laughing, and the orchestra playing softly in the background. Despite the wind brushing her skin, she felt her heart warm, knowing her guests were having a splendid time tonight. After all, there was a need for celebration. And, her mother would always say that there was always an occasion to throw a party. Tonight was no exception.
Another light breeze brushed up against her. She tilted her head back slightly, looking up at the full moon and the stars that hung so delicately up in the pitch-black night sky. She wondered what it would be like to touch the sky, to surround herself with the stars and look down upon the earth as she watched the people go through their days.
She took a deep breath in and closed her eyes, enjoying the serene moment without the feeling of having to talk to someone. She could bask in awe by herself and be perfectly fine, whereas her mother would talk her ear off, ignoring the beauty of the night.
Her relaxing moment came to an end when the balcony doors opened from behind her. She didn't turn around, hoping the person wouldn't recognize her and leave. She needed a quiet moment alone to herself for a change.
Inside, she felt as if she was going a hundred miles per minute, but out here, she felt as if time had stopped.
"Mistress Kalista, your mother wishes to see you."
She sighed, knowing that these moments were too good to be true. Sending up a prayer of thanks to the Moon Goddess, she turned around to see one of her maids, Lana, standing before her in black trousers and a white blouse. Her hair was pulled back tightly and in a neat bun on the back of her head. It was customary for all maids to dress the same so they wouldn't draw any attention to themselves as they served those around them.
"Very well," Kalista replied. Lana turned and headed through the balcony doors, knowing her mistress was right behind her.
As she moved, her red dress brushed the bottom of the ballroom floor, her silver heels clicked with every step she took. Her mother taught her how to walk, how to talk, how to exude every ounce of confidence. With all of the years of training, Kalista managed to exude confidence as if it were a walk in the park.
As she followed Lana through the crowd of people, she was either unaware or undeterred by the stares she received from her guests. Eyes roamed over her figure, the majority filled with respect, others filled with envy or even a smidgen of lust.
Kalista recognized the back of her mother's head which was tied up in a fancy bun with a braid running through and around, small tendrils falling in front of her ears to frame her face. Her mother also wore a red dress, but hers was more reserved compared to her daughter's in that, she had no slit running down her leg.
Her mother was talking with the Beta's mate, Cassandra, who wore a dark blue dress that showed off her slight figure. Cassandra noticed Kalista first, and her face lit up like a child on Christmas. Upon arriving next to her mother, Cassandra exposed her neck to show submission.
Kalista was still not used to people, especially those who were older than her, regarding her as an authoritative figure. With a nod of her head, Cassandra returned to her usual position. "My, what a lovely young woman you have become."
