RING!
RING!
RING!
I groggily feel around my night stand for my cellphone. Sunlight pours into my room but squeeze my eyes shut in hopes of sleeping more.
Finally I find my phone. Man I feel bad for blind people. It's Karen.
"Hello?" My morning breath is unbearable. So I get up and walk towards the bathroom. Brushing my teeth as Karen babbles about something. Then she says something that I can understand.
"Our letters came in!!!!!"
I had no idea what she was talking about. Finally I understand a word from this girl, but I don't know what she means, fabulous. "Our what's?"
Sandra's voice came on too, I've always hated when they did three way calls. Their voices both turn to static, they yell a lot on the phone.
"Come on girl, don't tell me double A P didn't send you a letter?"
"Double A P?" My mind feels like mush and I concentrate. What was in that milk last night?
"AAP, blanks academy for the something!" Karen states.
None of us knew what AAP stood for, but the second A was definitely academy.
Suddenly I had a burst of energy. Running to the kitchen as fast as I could. The angel clock on the wall reads "2:12", "Wow I really slept that late?!"
"You just woke up?" Sandra asks. I forgot I was still on the phone.
"Yeah I got little to no sleep last night!" I fumble through the mail on the counter. Nothing.
Then I notice an envelope off to the side next to a plate of pancakes.
"I thought I heard the phone ring!" My mom walks over in her doctor scrubs and smiles at my excitement.
I pick up the envelope that holds my future. Its closed with sealing wax, with an official looking envelope. With the academy crest stamped into the red ball of wax.
"Are you guys ready?" Karen asks.
"Let's do this!"
I hear their envelopes crinkle over the phone, as I open mine. My heart pounds as I lift the letter out of it cozy pocket.
Dear Ms. Silvercrest,
We regret to inform you, that due to all the applications. We simply don't have enough room for everyone. I hope you understand, and hope you re-apply next year!
-Sincerly,
Jenny A.
My heart sinks, "I didn't get in!" I hear Karen and Sandra say over the phone.
"It's ok guys! I....." I turn back to the paper and almost like magic it starts to move. A ripple spread across its surface to reveal a new letter.
Dear Ms. Silvercrest,
We are pleased to tell you, that you have been accepted into Arachville's Academy! I look forward to seeing you in our program. It will be nice to have a Silvercrest here once more! I know you will do great things like your mother. And just like your father I'll keep my eye on you too.
-Sincerely,
Jenny A.
"I got in......"
Karen and Sandra groan on the other end of the line. "Congrats! But how does that make us feel better?"
I don't know, I didn't even know how I got in! I'm not athletic like Karen, or super intelligent like Sandra. The only thing I've really accomplished is that I became president of the debate team last year as a freshmen. That never happens, but still it's not enough.
"I don't know if you guys don't want me to go...."
My phone suddenly fills with a static yelling sound. "I can't understand you guys when you yell!"
"You have to go!" Karen yells again.
Sandra then takes over, "It's your dream! I was hoping we could go to the same school....but I guess AAP doesn't want us to...."
Her voice sounds so sad and disappointed. I could almost see her puppy eyes and pouting lip.
"So I should go?"
"Yes! Yes! Of course!" They both yell in unison.
We continue to bat the topic around until finally, I was pretty sure if I didn't go one would take my letter and my place.
"Good bye girls! I'll have to pack then!"
They both blow kisses through their phones. Then it's replaced by the steady mono-tone beep of an ended call.
"So are you excited?" My mother smiles and prepares a lunch for herself.
I smile, "Of course! But what did they mean by having another Silvercrest?"
She turns away and spreads peanut butter into a whole wheat slice of bread.
"Mom?" She has never kept secret from me before.
She sighs and puts the bread on the table. "Well it's no wonder why you got into Arachville's! It was where your father and I went to school."
"So I only got in, because you and dad went there?!"
Now it all makes sense on why I got in when Karen and Sandra didn't.
"Of course not! Arachville's Academy chose you because you have a special gift!" She takes my face in her hands. "You are a very special girl, Victoria Silvercrest!"
Her words make me feel a little better. "Will you help me pack then?"
