"When do you think she'll be awake?" I could hear a raspy deep voice question. It was a voice I've never heard before.
Keeping my eyes shut, I continued to hear the voice of my mother beside me.
"The doctor said not for a while. The medicine should wear off soon so I'm sure she'll wake up then." My mom replied. Doctor? Who is she talking to?
"It's been like 15 hours already." The other person seemed to be impatient.
I could feel something pinching my arm slightly but I didn't want to move.
"I know, she won't be going anywhere for a few days anyway. Go ahead and go home for a little while huh? I'm sure you're tired yourself."
The conversation paused for a second and I was scared they realized it was awake.
"Fine. I'll be back though." The sound of footsteps went past me and a few feet away. "See you later Mrs.Evans."
After a few moments of silence I slowly opened my eyes to find myself lying in a hospital room. Looking down, I was dressed in the most ugly gown I've ever seen and I had a cast on my left arm.
My right arm had an IV in it which explained the pinching feeling. Once I tried to move i was at a loss of breath and I quietly whimpered from a sharp pain in my ribs. Everything hurt.
"Mom?" I called to her and she immediatley looked up at me with relief washing over her.
"Skylar, I'm so glad you're okay." She nearly started crying as she rolled a chair closer to my side, not touching me.
"Why does my whole body hurt." I whimpered again, only making my side hurt worse.
My head was pounding, my arm was throbbing, my side felt like a knife was going through it and I was miserable.
"Nurse!" My mother called loudly enough for a passing by nurse to hear her.
"Miss Evans you're awake, how are you feeling?" The polite young blonde asked me. She gave me a soft smile as she looked me over.
"She's in a lot of pain." My mom answered for me, rushing the poor nurse.
"It is around the time the medication should be wearing off and I need to hook you up to another IV. I'll be back ASAP." She assured me and scurried out of the room.
I was so uncomfortable but I didn't want to risk moving.
"I called your father as soon as we got here and he's taking the next flight out. He should be here in a few hours." My mother informed me.
"What am I doing here?" My voice croaked, leaning my head to the side.
"You were hit by a drunk driver last night on your way home from Eva's house. It's a miracle you're still alive. God, I'm so thankful." She teared up again. "You were stopped at a stop sign and he hit you from behind. He didn't even try to stop, he was so drunk." I could tell there was anger behind her words.
"If it weren't for that boy, you could've bled out from that gash you got in your leg. You were on the back road coming home and you know how vacant that road normally is at night. I don't think you've noticed it yet but you have 15 stiches on your thigh." She pulled down the sheet for a moment to show a long bandage I had on my left thigh.
"Is the other guy okay?" I questioned.
"He's a little banged up, no reason for his ass to not be thrown in jail immediately." She simply replied.
The nurse came in at a good time with a new IV and medication for pain.
"What boy?" I asked my mom as the nurse was hooking up the new IV.
