It was cold.
The type of cold that you could see your breath and the cold that your mom dresses you in bundles of shirts and jackets in.
And sticks those uncomfortable mittens on your small hands.
"Mommy" seven year old brendon whined trying to pull off the mittens that were covering his hands.
"Brendon keep them on or we are going home" his mother said letting go of his hand as they approched the snow covered park. "Okay now go play meet a new friend" his mom said referring to the kids running around in the snow. People, Brendon didn't like people, other then his family and he tolerated most of them. He much rather perfered playing in the snow alone or with his dad... he would help him build snowmen. The small boy looked around, all of the kids looked older and he didn't want to play with a older kid they were bossy. He sighed about to just play on his own when he saw a tiny boy standing alone. He was rubbing his two small bare hands together trying to warm up. The boy was younger then Brendon and much smaller too. Brendon smiled instantly liking this brown haired boy and deciding he was going to be his friend. He trudged his short legs through the snow over to the boy.
"Hi my names Brendon whats yours" he said causing the smaller to gasp and turn around. He smiled once he saw the taller boy standing infront of him.
"R-ryan" he stuttered smiling at his hopefully new friend he doesn't have any friends. "Wanna play with me" Brendon asked the shivering Ryan infront of him who smiled widley.
"Yes but i d-dont have any mittens" he said looking down feeling tears build up. If he didn't have mittens he couldn't play and if he couldn't play then Brendon will never be his friend. "Hey don't cry its okay" Brendon said hugging the boy who was sobbing now. Brendon started panicking he didn't want his new friend to be sad then he thought
'mommy sings to me when I cry'.
"You are my sunshine my only sunshine you make me happy when skys are grey" Brendon sang hugging the boy to his chest.
"You'll never know dear how much I love you so please don't take my sunshine away"
The smaller smiled his crying had stopped and he was now relaxed and content. "Y-you have a p-pwetty voice" he said his small lisp visible. "Thank you, now here you can have one of my mittens and ill have the other" Brendon said handing the boy his mitten. "Thank you and we are fwiends wite" Ryan asked nervously.
"Yes Forever"
"Pwomise"
"I promise"
Time skip 8 years Ryan is 13
"M-mom I ha-have to tell y-you something" Ryan stuttered fumbling with his hands.
"What is it Ryan and what have we talked about calling me" his mother said staring at him with cold eyes.
"S-sorry ma'am a-and I think im g-gay" he stuttered quietly looking down.
"Excuse me" she said standing up from her seat at the kitchem table.
"Im g-gay" he said and then felt a stinging pain on his cheek. His mother had slapped him something that has happened far too much in his short life.
"I DO EVERYTHING FOR YOU I BUY YOU YOUR FUCKING MEDICINE THAT YOU NEED TO LIVE AND THIS IS HOW YOU REPAY ME" she scremed shoving the fragile boy hard.
"No y-you dont you h-hide me b-because im sick an-and my s-sibling give me m-my clothes cause you d-dont wanna buy me t-them a-and so w-what if i-i like b-boys" he cried holding his cheek.
"GET DOWNSTAIRS RIGHT NOW YOUR FATHER WILL BE DOWN SOON TO DEAL WITH YOU" she screamed causing the boy to run downstairs in the basement were he spent most of his time. He curled up on his bed and began sobbing into his pillow. He heard his mother tell his dad about what had happened prior and prepared himself. As he heard his dad opened the door he looked at the small cloth object that was placed under his pillow.
A small mitten.
