Memories

As the morning light filtered through my windows, I stretched upwards, my body surrounded by the blue silk sheets.

A hand played in my hair, and I smiled to myself, still keeping my eyes closed just so I could stay still just a little longer.

“Did you sleep well my Queen?” Dantor asked, his breath tickling my head.

I grumbled some form of response loving the feeling of him chuckling underneath me.

“What time is it?” I asked, turning myself onto my side and resting my head on his chest.

“An hour after dawn your majesty.” Dantor replied, watching as I bolted upright, pulling the sheets up with me.

I cursed something under my breath and Dantor laughed once again, the musical notes filling my heart with joy. I scowled in his general direction before slipping out of the bed and making my way over to the vanity. Watching as Dantor had a few precious seconds to view my body.

“What are the plans for today Dantor?”

As well as being one of my lovers, Dantor also acted as one of my secretaries – which meant he often knew where I was better than I did.

I barely listened as he rattled off a list of meetings and gathering which I had to attending; instead I focused on getting my hair into a suitable style, smiling to myself when I remembered my mother doing the same throughout my childhood.

I took a quick glance at my human calendar, which updated itself automatically to best fit the human time schedule.

“Dantor” I said, interjecting suddenly.

“Yes my Queen?” He asked, an eyebrow raised and his eyes searching mine through the mirror.

“Post sentries’ top side and acquire ‘normal’ clothing for every fairy. We’re going on an excursion tomorrow.”

The look of pure joy and excitement that crossed Dantor’s face was enough to make the looming trip worthwhile. He slid out of my bed, stretching exquisitely and I had to remind myself it was impolite to stare. But it was hard not to, with his bright blue hair and matching wings.

He was an excellent example of a fairy man.

With a quick smile in my direction, Dantor disappeared into my bathroom to shower and change into the men’s clothes I always kept handy in preparation for our little sleepovers.

After changing into the dark grey suit Dantor disappeared to find a few fairies to scout topside, finding the newest fashions that the ‘ordinary’ people wore so that we were more likely to blend in.

For the time being though, I allowed myself a smile. Since I had been Queen every year around the same time I allowed my fairies a chance to visit the human world – and while they frolicked and make a mess of things I visited my mother Selene, and my brother Peter. Every year I gave them two gifts; good health, and good luck.

And with my yearly visits much had remained the same, except both Pete and mum had gotten better paying jobs and moved into a smaller apartment.

They didn’t need three rooms when there were only two of them.

They knew enough to know I was still alive; I had made sure to send them a letter explaining as much as I could – that I had fallen in love with a man and decided to remain with him and become his wife. It was about as close to the truth as I could get without fully explaining everything to them.
