I knew this day would come. The death of a great creator, a scientist, an engineering technologist to be clear. My father studied whatever science could give him, he never forced me to do the same though.
I was going back home all alone after the funeral. The relatives of my family lived separately, I lived with my father. Well, I used to.
"Oh, wow! What is this dad?" I asked with excitement, seeing him working on a new machine.
"It's just something to keep you company when I'm gone," he laughed. "I hope it's helpful enough."
"Why would you go? Don't leave me." I pouted as I waddled over to hug him.
"I won't go, sweetie. Now why don't you go play with your toys." He removed his gloves and ruffled my hair.
"Is this a toy for me as well?"
"Not a toy, but a friend."
It's really shocking how yesterday I hung out with my dad at his lab, we had such a good time, and today... he isn't there anymore. It's not that I'm not sad, I knew this was bound to happen, and dad told me his time would come soon. So I was prepared.
When I reached home, I went into my room and slumped down on my bed. A few hours of crying made me really tired and as I shifted into a comfortable position, my eyes started to close.
*
I woke up to the sound of a crash.
"What the.." I rubbed the corner of my eyes as I got up and walked out of my room. I could see the living room from the stairs, but there was nothing unusual.
My eyes gazed at the clock that was hung above the T.V..
"Honestly, what the hell is happening at 3 a.m.?" I asked myself. "How would I know?"
I only ever heard such sounds when dad was working in his lab. I stood still for a few seconds, thinking before I jogged down the stairs and across the hall. I entered the door which led to the lab.
I walked through the mirrored corridor, entering another door. The door creaked open and the lab was clear.
Smoke, I could smell it, it was very faint but I was so used to it, I could recognize it immediately. I switched on the big button and the silver room lighted up. The room was clean, nothing had moved but I could here faint sounds and it scared me.
I walked closer to where I thought the sound came from, with every step my heart beat went faster. I was heading into the storage compartment, another big room where incomplete parts of machines were kept. The door was locked. Smoke seeped through the gaps of the door.
"The key.." I dug at my collar and pulled out the thread I had always worn, it was quite dirty now. I never knew why I'd get the need to open this door. I never used the key on my neck but dad said I'd need it one day. One day...
This day..
Once I managed to get the key out I unlocked the door. My heart stopped for a second before I took in what I saw. There was a long metal box that had fallen down, the top of the box was open and that's exactly where the smoke was coming from.
I walked closer, what else could I have done, till I could see what hid in the coffin like box. Before I could clearly see anything, movement took place, a thing got up from inside the box- I could see its hair, then its eyes and ears, then its nose. Human behaviour was prominent. It moved just like a man not like a machine.
"Task: Activate. Successful." It said, it had a human voice. It sounded nothing like robot, looked nothing like one either. Its hair looked just as natural as mine. It finally stood up and I could see the man-like machine completely.
"Now I need to get out of this room," he sighed, I saw him shake his head, his brown hair bounced a little. He suddenly turned back really fast and I gasped, and he gasped as well.
Out of impulse, I was going to walk back, but tripped over something behind.
It was as if time slowed down, very natural when you're falling. But it was shocking. Everything was. I've only ever seen my dad make machines that do NOT look like humans, I feel like I underestimated his ability to create such a robot.
It took milliseconds for the newly awakened machine to jog to me. He caught me by my waist and hand, his face was very close to mine, his chest was heaving along with mine. He had full lips, pink and plum, a beautiful pair of hooded eyes going perfectly well with his small nose.
"You should be careful," He said, shaking his head. "You're as clumsy as ever."
"What?" I asked suddenly. I stood up straight, my heart was racing, head aching. "W-what are you.. exactly?"
He inched back a bit with a smile, a smile so natural and so beautiful.
"I'm the creation of Dr. Song Kyungwoo, your father. Since I'm a robot, I can live as long as the world exists, maybe even after that but I'm not provided with that information. My purpose is to accompany you, be with you always, protect you from any possible harm, help you in any possible way." He said, no hesitation, no pauses, as if he learned well for a test. "Anything else?
"How come you don't behave more like a robot?"
"I'm a fully developed version of a human being. I have every thing a male being has along with ultimate intelligence. I also have chemically generated DNA, hormones and blood, though they cannot harm a pure human incase of blood transfer, sexual intercourse, and such."
I don't know how I was able to take that all in, but I completely believed in my father's ability to create such a thing now. But I was still in shock.
"Ho-"
"First, I think we should leave this room, there is no ventilation inside, you may suffocate." He held my wrist and led me out. He knew the place well, very well. And I was still taking in all he told me.
