Somehow I was a little bit disappointed that I didn't get an answer after I texted Wrench to inform him, that I have arrived home. Even though, I loved this night and couldn't be any happier. In my mind, I recalled every little moment, every movement and came to a stop in the very same situation. His mask against my forehead and the tiny world only we two existed, a world I wish I would be able to enter again.
In the warmth of the comforting cocoon, which my thoughts have built, I fell asleep and rested without haunting images of my past.
Even waking up wasn't a burden to myself, well rested I rolled around and grabbed my cell phone. There were only a few new messages but one caught my eyes right away, Wrench.
"Good morning Hummingbird, did you catch some sleep? Do you have any plans for the evening?"
Inavoidable I had to smile but after the words sunk in my expression changed to a confused one. Hummingbird? Why?
"Hey, yeah I slept great. What about you? Could you deal with everything? Ahm...no I don't have any plans, why?" After I hit send I realized that I have forgotten the most important question. "But why Hummingbird?"
Slowly I got up and decided to take a shower to get my mind up for everything that could happen today. The water had the perfect temperature and so I stayed a little bit longer inside than I usually would. Later I stepped out from the shower and grabbed a towel, while I was rubbing myself dried I hopped in the direction of my phone. With a thumping heart I picked it up and checked for new messages but there was none. "He will be sleeping..." I smiled a little bit before I started my morning routine and left for work.
It wasn't an even slightly exciting day also there wasn't much to do besides listening to the teasing of my co-worker but even when it sounded weird I used it to brag a little bit. Our manager wasn't in the house so I had my mobile phone directly in my pocket. That wasn't really helpful with my waiting because I pulled it out almost every minute, my nervous brain gave me a lot of phantom vibrating. "Aw, he will text you" My co-worker saw how nervous I was and tried to get my mind off my phone but just with a little bit of success. He didn't text me the whole day and I was depressed about it, maybe I did something wrong? The thoughts were pulling me more down and with my head hanging I closed the shop. I just wanted to go home and hide under my blanket as I had never existed, it was nervewracking that it upset me so much.
I was heading in the direction of my bus station when I heard a honk. What fucking jerk honked at me? Who does he think he is? Without checking who made that noise I flipped him off and went ahead. "Hey, hummingbird!" A robotic voice called after me and left me thunderstruck. Slowly I turned around and saw Wrench beside his van and waving his hand. "I am so sorry, I was so busy and couldn't text you...and then I finished too late and..." Wrench seemed frustrated and let out a loud sigh. Happiness spread through my body as I walked towards him and couldn't even really listen to his excuse. "It's okay" Great, I couldn't get more out of my mouth but at least I was able to give him a hug. It felt like his body tensed up, because of that I started to question my decision and the closeness of yesterday was gone.
Irritated I let go of him and starred straight to the ground, perhaps I should just leave and get away from this uncomfortable situation. A crackling sound was heard next to my ear and surprised I looked up to see Wrench scratching uncomfortable the back of his head. "Are you hungry?"
What should I answer, that question came so suddenly. "Yes, a little bit" "Than do you want to go grab something?" I nodded again and wasn't sure why I did agree to it, hopefully with something to eat we would feel more comfortable with each other. Wrench nodded three times as if he couldn't believe that I agreed to his suggestion. Silently I followed to his car and took place in the front seat, we drove silently for a few minutes and the air was so thick I could cut it right away.
"Oh, Shit!" Suprised I looked to Wrench who watched me for a moment while the car was still driving. "Are you totally out of your mind?! Watch the street, you donkey!" The words came out way harsher than I wanted it but my paranoid side was faster than my rationale. Wrench sacked together like he was a puppy who got a kick for no reason and looked back on the street, he stayed silent. I was breathing a little bit faster but didn't want to talk, on one side I was too ashamed and on the other, I thought that I was in the right. The car came to a halt and Wrench took a deep breath before I heard his robotic voice. "Did I upset you?" His voice was kind of muffled and even with the distortion of his voice, I had the impression that he sounded terrible. I shook my head but didn't want to open my mouth to give a proper answer. "Look, I am terribly sorry and it will not happen again. I promise! Just .... talk to me!" His voice became more bagging and I shook my head. In the corner of my eye, I saw how he sank together and started hitting his head against the steering wheel. "Wrench, it is ok" My voice was hushed and was focused on my hands. He didn't stop his movement and so I shyly stretched out my hand and laid it on his shoulder, directly he froze and turned his head in my direction. "I shouldn't have snapped at you like that..." He was silent for a few moments before his mask showed again ^ ^. "We are ok, Hummingbird?" My lip corners lifted a little bit upwards before I answered. "Only if you tell me why Hummingbird" Wrench snickered a little bit before he shrugged with his shoulders, He leaned towards me. "That's simple, you remind me of a Hummingbird. How you ran around and how fast you were jumping at the Liberty." It didn't sound really logical to me but I accepted this answer.
"Do you still want something to eat?" Wrench tried his best to get back on track and so did I. "Yeah. What do you want to eat?" "The same what you want, I am not that picky" "Are you sure?" He nodded eagerly and seemed to become more comfortable again, luckily.
"I want to have (favorite food)" I decided quickly before looking at him. "Is that ok for you?" "Like I said, I am fine with everything and I know the best restaurant to get it. Do you want to call them so we can just pick it up?" I was curious where he wanted to take me but agreed. "What do you want?" "The same as you"
After we arrived and picked it up we drove a little bit outside of the city, we talked a little bit but nothing significant. Wrench slowed down and parked the car. "Come on, before the food gets cold" I still didn't know where he wanted me to take but followed him eagerly, curious about everything.
Wrench walked in front of me and we arrived at the beach, it looked so nice and it was quiet "Normally there is hardly someone here at the night, so I thought it would be nice" He explained fast and laid down a large picnic blanket. I smiled and sat down while staring around me, it was lovely and calming. Wrench lifted his mask barely enough to eat and drink something but he seemed always being cautious about it. "Why the mask?" I was absolutely curious about it and hoped he would give me an answer. He froze for a moment before looking at me with ~ ^.
"Don't you know, I am a professional superhero and so can't reveal my real identity" I sulked a little bit but didn't get a different answer from him and had to give up for tonight. He was strange but I enjoyed the time again.
