Life had always been nothing but a struggle for Piyali Jaiswal, fondly called Piya by everybody in her orphanage. Piya had lost her mother to cancer 8 years ago. Piya's eyes swarmed with tears as she remembered those beautiful days of love and care..............her mother would daily comb her hair and tell her enchanting fairy-tales before going to bed,the delicious taste and aroma of her homemade meals that would put all the top restaurants to shame, the softness of her lap and the sweetness of her tender smile. Piya remembered always being told by her Mom that she was a special and loved princess of hers. Piya smiled, clutching the S-shaped silver locket gifted by her mother, while a tear or two rolled down her cheeks. She went to bed.

Piya found herself in a dense jungle. The silence of the night was broken seldom by the shrill cry of the cicada and,the rustle of the leaves in the cool breeze. Piya felt oddly peaceful, closing her eyes to feel the solitude in the lap of Mother Nature. Something extremely cold yet smooth touched her shoulder and Piya instantly opened her eyes, all her senses alert. She found herself face-to-face with a stranger. There was a grayish streak in his black eyes and the sleek black hair was elegantly combed. The rest of the face was hidden in shadow. Just as Piya was about to move in order to get a better look  at him there was a loud and persistent ringing.

Piya's eyes fluttered open. She realized it was her alarm clock which was ringing. Snoozing it,she irritably got out of bed, wishing that she could have had a look at the stranger's full face. Piyali Jaiswal had been dreaming of this man frequently, since when, she couldn't remember. From her teens, most probably. Today was a very important day in her short life. She would be going away from the orphanage to the most prestigious college of Dehradun, on a full-time free studentship for the entire course of her study - BA Hons. A new life awaited her there. The scholarship letter mentioned that Piya would be provided with free lodging and food at the college hostel. So Piya would be returning to the orphanage only during her vacations. Piya felt very anxious - she had never lived anywhere else apart from her mother's home when her mother was alive and, after her mother's death, the orphanage.

Since childhood, Piya had always been a studious and bright student. After appearing for her Plus Two board exams, Piya had applied to several reputed colleges providing scholarship facilities, for admission. She had appeared for several competitive exams like Jee-main, AIPMT, NEET, etc, but sadly couldn't qualify. Being an orphan who had inherited her Mom's extremely meagre savings, Piya had never been able to afford tuitions and coaching facilities. She didn't manage to go to a good college through her scores in these exams, but Piya didn't lose hope and applied to other colleges as well, with a thought that there's a chance she can get selected to a good and reputed college through her marks in the plus two board exams.

"Her selection at the most prestigious college of Dehradun is not only the proof of Piyali Jaiswal's intelligence, but also of her determination, grit and passion", said Aunt Isabel, the orphanage's in-charge, "Piyali Jaiswal's life story is a story of success against odds. Students, take a cue fom her. She didn't let this tag of a 'financially poor orphan' kill her dreams. She is a true glory of our humble home for orphan students". Aunt Isabel then hugged and felicitated Piya with a cheque, memento and award.

Piya thanked everyone at he orphanage for their support and love for so many years, in this otherwise ruthless and selfish world. She then set out to her new college, armed with her luggage in both her hands and a guide map. Piya felt nervous and jittery, she didn't know how college-life would turn out to be. She took a short-cut to the college in order to reach as early as possible. Numerous thoughts flashed across her mind. What if she faced ragging? What if she couldn't cope up with life at college? What if she couldn't get to know any good tutorials or at least guidance for cracking the UPSC exams, her career goal? However, Piya suddenly had an idea, what if she met this man she dreamt of frequently, at this college? Her two fair scheeks blushed beet red on thinking about this possibility.

Suddenly Piya felt someone running swiftly behind her, bringing her out of her thoughts. She tossed her head back in curiosity but there was no one. After a few more glances, Piya resumed her walk to Mount College, her destination.
