It didn't take long until we got there, in fact, we had a lot of time to spare. Out of the corner of my eye, I could see her watching the lights pass as we turn into the parking lot to Big 5 Sporting Goods. A confused look crossed her face but it faded as she got out and followed me in. I headed straight for the 'Bike Gear' section.
"Alright, choose a helmet. A good one, and one that you like. Don't worry about the cost, just pick it and go." I smiled and patted her on the shoulder as I stepped back and watched her decide. She seemed to gravitate around the black ones. Reigna Carmen was unlike any girl I've met. She had long straight black hair with a hint of dark brown here and there, and striking black eyes. Her skin was a bit darker than others. But I didn't mind. It was always stunning to me. She had walked up and down the isle twice, her hands picking up random helmets to get a good look. I watched as her facial expressions changed each time she found one that she didn't like. Her nose scrunched up and she frowned slightly. I almost giggled, as I found it to be exceptionally adorable. A third time down and chose a helmet, double checked it and then ran up and showed me what she picked.
"Well, Señorita, you've certainly got good taste in helmets." I wasn't lying either. It was as cool as she was. It was a midnight black with a pair of metallic silver wings hugging the back. I picked up three small throw away cameras just in case. We rushed to the counter, bought the items and ran out of there as quick as we could.
"So.. do you know how to ride a motorcycle?" She asked as we tossed her helmet in the back next to mine.
"Whatcha mean?"
"Uh.. The helmets, duh. They are motorcycle helmets, aren't they?" She laughed and her elbow nudged mine playfully. My heart skipped a beat and I drew in my breath, attempting to be as chill as I could.
"Pffffffft, c'mon, that's so NOT what they're for! This is supposed to be a surprise so stop being nosey!"
"Okay, okay! Fine." She leaned forward and turned on my radio, and started skipping around stations, searching for something clear.
"Try 105.1," I said.
Reigna skipped to 105.1 and old school music filled my tuck. Her smile grew into a gasp, "How did you know??"
"Remember, back in freshman year, you told me your favorite music was old school music? And I just happened to know which station it was."
"Bro, that was two years ago, you still remembered that? I don't even remember that."
"Well.. it was your favorite. How could I not remember?" I gave her a quick glance before clearing my throat. "Anyways, don't you love this song?"
She raised the volume and her face lit up as she recognized the beat.
Do you remember, the 21st night of September
Love was changing the minds of pretenders
While chasing the clouds away
Our hearts were ringing
In the key that our souls were singing
As we danced in the night
Remember how the stars stole the night away
Hey hey hey
Ba de ya, say do you remember
Ba de ya, dancing in September
Ba de ya, never was a cloudy daaayyy
"I LOVE THIS SONG!" She yelled over the music. I laughed and joined in. She sang every word and danced along with it too. As the song ended, she gave up in a fit of laughter and lowered the music. I smiled, every gesture she made killed me. In the best way possible, of course. Her smile, her laugh, her love of music, even the way she touched my radio. Gosh, I really was head of heels for this girl.. "If this isn't love, I don't know what is," I whispered.
"What did you say?"
"Oh nothing, just laughing." I shot her a quick smirk.
"Laughing at me?? Why, because I sing horribly? I know, I know, I apologise for murdering your ears, but c'mon bro. Who can resist Earth, Wind and Fire?" She leaned in and placed her elbow on my shoulder while giggling.
God, my stomach.
"You don't sing horribly, Bonita. Have you heard me? Now THAT'S murder."
She removed her elbow and shook her head, "I have heard you. But you don't sound bad at all. OH, remember the play we did in elementary?? The Old McDonald Play? BRO, you looked absolutely HILARIOUS in that cow costume!!!"
I looked at her in awe, I KNOW she did NOT just bring that up! "Oh, YOU shouldn't be talking, Old Mrs. McDonald!"
She laughed so hard she snorted, "At least I didn't have to sing a bunch of lame "Moo"s the whole time! Oh.. God.." She paused to catch her breath, "GOD, I think I have a picture."
"NO, NO, nooooo, that is in the past, I am NEVER doing that again." I kept one hand on the steering wheel while the other tried to grab her phone.
"HAHAA, I'm kidding, I'm kidding, I don't have a picture." She covered her mouth to keep from laughing and we both drove in silence for a few seconds before she whispered, "But I think my mom does."
I covered my face with one hand, attempting to hold back a smile. I failed. "You know what?"
"What!" She glared at me through playful eyes.
"Be ready, Princessa, welcome to our first destination."
