As soon as Ann arrived at Yoda, she knew something was up. The staff were huddled together talking, and didn't move even when they saw her come in.
As she reached the door of Nathan's office, something bumped against the door, and she could hear a commotion inside. Raising an eyebrow, she turned to the window and peered into the office, where she could just make out two men fighting. Running to her office, she grabbed a candleholder and thrust it resolutely at the window.
There was a crisp, loud crack, before the entire window came crashing to the ground.
The two men froze and both looked over to see Ann standing some distance away from the empty window. "Hey" Nathan, open the door."
Ian looked stunned. And Nathan's expression had quickly changed from anger to one of impotence. He couldn't help but sigh—she really was something else.
Ann was clearly in high spirits. With a flick of her long curly hair, she walked gracefully into the general manager's office, which was in a complete mess. "Why have you stopped? Carry on—I'll act as referee. I just knocked on the glass so you'd hear me. Well, don't just stand there with your mouths open!"
What could be more wonderful to watch than the police's very own taekwondo master against the mafia's top thug?
"Hello, it's been a while." Ian rolled down his sleeves and greeted Ann politely. Hmm, well brought up.
Ann nodded, suddenly feeling rather depressed. She had wanted to get some dirt on Nathan and unable to contain herself, she had gone in to watch the action. Ian's gentle greeting felt familiar to her. It reminded her of someone else...
Nathan was acutely aware of the change in her countenance, and got the feeling that he was in trouble. He didn't know what terrible things Jackson would do if Ian told him that Ann had been in touch with Charles again.
"Ann, get me last quarter's report. Now!" Nathan took on the tone of a general manager.
"Do it yourself." She wasn't buying it, and glanced at him indifferently. Straightening her white dress, she left the office, her head held high.
"By the way, when you two have finished flirting with each other, I'd like you to come to my office. There's something I want to ask you."
Ian grinned whimsically. "All this flirting is exhausting. I'm done. Goodbye."
Nathan blushed and said nothing.
Ian was aware of his embarrassment, and his eyes softened. "Nathan, thank you," he said sincerely.
Nathan blushed again at Ann's mention of "something".
"How do I know? I didn't do anything."
"You saw it though, right?
While you were out socializing."
"Ryan and Ben are decent guys, and Matt and Mike don't go in for that sort of thing."
"Huh? So it's only Jackson that likes it? So he's not decent?"
Nathan was nervous. "Hey, stop trying to catch me out!" I told you Mike's girlfriend is from up on the seventeenth floor. She's been trained. It's how she makes her living."
"Very well, let's go to Bass Tower."
Nathan really wanted to bite his own tongue. It was only for Ian's sake that he told Ann about Jackson being with another woman that day. He'd hoped that Jackson would have been happy that Ann was jealous. But who knew she would be so insistent on knowing all the details.
But if she were to act on those details, wouldn't Jackson reward him?
The image of Ian's handsome face popped into his mind and his face reddened. Shaking his head he hurried after her. May as well be prepared.
Better to follow her and fan the flames a little. Jackson won't be able to refuse me anything after this.
