This story is based on the 1956 award-winning short film "The Red Balloon" by Albert Lamorisse. The red balloon is a symbol of happiness. For example, when the gang of boys stole Pascale's balloon and popped it, he was sad, so everyone's balloons came to him. The boys popping the balloon symbolizes the boys taking away Pascale's happiness and when the balloons came back, it symbolizes that Pascale realized there is more happiness in the world. However, it could be a figure of hope also. An example of the red balloon being a figure of hope is if the gang of boys could be a symbol of what Pascale has hope for and when the boys pop his balloon, he could have lost hope for whatever he had hope for. When the balloons come to him, it symbolizes that his hope came back.
