It was in 1942 that Mr. Chandra Kant Birla founded the company named 'Hindustan Motors'. Just one year after India's independence, Hindustan released their first model- 'Hindustan 10' based on the platform of the British car- 'Morris 10'. HM 10 was manufactured in the factory in Uttarpara, West Bengal.

Hindustan, in 1954, launched the 'HM Landmaster' based on the 'Morris Oxford Series II.'

Landmaster, not being very successful was replaced by the newer model named 'Ambassador' based on the 'Morris Oxford Series III' in 1957

Landmaster, not being very successful was replaced by the newer model named 'Ambassador' based on the 'Morris Oxford Series III' in 1957. Even today, Ambassador remains the most sold made in India car ever followed by Maruti 800. She was sold non-stop until 2014. Her long production span has placed her in the list of world's top 10 longest running production cars. In this list, she comes between the German Mercedes-Benz SL-Class, being produced since 1954 and the British Mini, being produced since 1959.

During her long lifetime, she has had a variety of uses. Initially, she was available to everyone including civilians but during her last decade, she was sold only to ministers for official works. Ambassador has also been used as taxis and tourist vehicles. Even today in 2018, yellow Ambassador taxis in Kolkata (Calcutta if asked by a classic Amby herself) are as common as they were 10 years ago. Ambassador Station Wagon has even been used ambulances. However, finding a general S/W Amby is as difficult as finding God. Therefore, finding one with 'ambulance' written on it is as difficult as finding God inside a terrorist.

Leaving these uses, Amby has also been used as Panels-Vans and Pick-up trucks

Above all of this, Ambassador has remained an 'Insignia of India' throughout the most of her life. Despite her long life, one thing has never changed. That is our love for Amby. We Indians have forever loved the Ambassador.
