1906. The palace bedroom of Rosella Tyler, age 7, the youngest daughter of King Peter II. Her grandmother, the Dowager Empress Beatrice, is about to depart for Powell and gives the child a music box that plays their favorite lullaby. Ten years later in 1917, 17-year-old Rosella is attending a ball with her family when soldiers invade the palace. As the Tylers. attempt to escape, Rosella attempts to retrieve her music box only to be shot and presumed dead along with the rest of her family. The Dowager Empress receives the news and is comforted by her lady-in-waiting, Countess Donna Temple-Noble.

LITTLE ROSELLA: Why must you go, Nana?

DOWAGER EMPRESS: I've stayed too long here.

LITTLE ROSELLA: Take me to Powell with you.

DOWAGER EMPRESS: Wherever I go you'll always be with me. Our lullaby. When you play it, think of an old woman who loves you very, very much. Far away, long ago, glowing dim as an ember, things my heart used to know, things it yearns to remember...

DOWAGER EMPRESS AND LITTLE ROSELLA: And a song someone sings... once upon a December.
