I was never really one for talking to people. I mean, I have terrible social skills and it isn't helping my self-esteem. I just can't seem to have a successful conversation without stumbling over my words or blushing.

So, talking to people online should be a better alternative. Right? I have time to decide what to say, and it helps that they can't see me. Plus, my parents would be happy to see me with friends even if they were virtual.

I leaned against my swivel chair and stared at the screen of my phone. My finger hovered over the download button. I was about to get something that was a mix of Skype and Kik, not that I care about either of those.

I sighed, finally downloading the app and setting my phone down. I didn't really have a choice in these situations anymore. It was either this or parents would forcefully make me hang out with someone. Besides, my lack of confidence seemed to cause my grades to decline from a B+ to a C-.

Ding!

I picked my phone back up and opened the app. I made my account under the name 'mar1na'. The moment my account was made, I was introduced to the basics of the app and an option that stood out to me the most.

This little bot would pair you up with someone based on your interests and age. I smiled a bit to myself, this could work.

FindAFriend: Welcome mar1na! what are some of your interests?

mar1na: uhh

mar1na: bad grades

FindAFriend: Any other interests besides uhh and bad grades?

mar1na: sleeping

mar1na: dogs

FindAFriend: 1 person found! Would you like to add them? The interests they have are Medical School, Volleyball, Dogs, and Sleeping!

Medical school? I furrowed my eyebrows. This person was probably way more organized than I was if they already have a future plan. I almost felt embarrassed, what was I gonna do anyway?

Whatever, screw it. I need friends, right? Ones that have good influences on me.

mar1na: Yes

FindAFriend: Great! Sleepless is now in your friends list, and you can chat with her whenever you'd like!

I hit the back button to see the name Sleepless at the top of my screen. Right away, I began typing up a hello message.

mar1na: hey, im marina. that find a friend thing matched me up with you.

I stared at my screen for almost five minutes straight before I sighed. Of course, it was stupid of me to think she'd reply right away. I was about to turn my phone off when I heard the familiar ding! meaning a new message.

Sleepless: Hey! Nice to meet you

Sleepless: Thanks!

Sleepless: Wyd right now?

mar1na: looking to improve my social skills lol

Sleepless: This place called smileycool, you should check them out sometime!

mar1na: I think I will, who doesn't love those cute faces?

Sleepless: Lol!

I smiled to myself, I was just about to type up a reply when I took notice of the time.

mar1na: ughh

Sleepless: ? What's up?

mar1na: I totally lost track of time, for me it's 1:16. I have school tomorrow, sorry!!!

Sleepless: Aww... I was having a nice time talking with you

mar1na: same :((( can we talk tomorrow?

Sleepless: Sure! We have a day off of school tomorrow, so I'm free to talk anytime.

mar1na: awesome!

mar1na: cya tomorrow then

I smiled as I turned off my phone, not noticing I had been blushing until I felt my cheek.
