The grocery store was only a few blocks away so she decided to walk. Her thoughts wandered to what her life might have been like. If she never met Noah.
If her friend never introduced them. Maybe if her heart was whole when she met him she would have known better. But Sophie was broken when Noah came into her life.
The first few months of their relationship were great. Until they moved in together and she started seeing the worst part of him. The side she didn't ever want to see again.
But how could she leave when her heart still belonged to him?
Shaking her head she looked ahead of her as she stepped into the parking lot of the store. Her eyes glanced over to the police car sitting outside. A man sat inside, he seemed to be talking on his phone.
As she walked passed the car their eyes locked and she couldn't help but feel a spark of interest inside of her. The officer stared back at her, after a moment he smiled and gave a slight nod and she did the same as she broke the lock between their eyes and headed into the store.
Getting only what they needed she hurried back outside, the officer was gone by then and her heart skipped a sudden beat at the thought of him. Walking back to the house she couldn't stop thinking about the spark she felt inside of her. A slight smile grew on Sophie's face, her heart fluttering but also dreading the thought of Noah finding out.
Giving a heavy sigh she carried the groceries into the house, suddenly greeted by Bear. A slight smile still on her face.
"What are you smiling about?" Noah snapped, as she saw him leaning over the couch, play-station controller in his hand.
She shook her head, "the dog. He always greets me and I think it's cute." She hoped her little lie would keep Noah from questioning her. Sophie didn't smile often because she had nothing but her dog to make her smile. Until now.
Placing the groceries into the fridge Sophie placed a few slices of bread in the toaster, grabbed a glass and poured milk in it. As the toast popped out of the toaster Noah came out into the kitchen.
"Did you get bacon?" He asked, his voice a nicer tone. Noah had his days and sometimes some days were better than others.
"Yes, do you want me to make some?" She asked him, taking the toast out and putting it on a plate.
"Yes," he said as he sat at the table, playing on his phone.
The bacon was already thawed as she cooked it, waiting for it to get crispy. The silence was broken by the dog barking.
Sophie instantly flinched, she knew what was coming. "Shut up you mutt!" Noah yelled, grabbing an apple front he table's center piece and throwing it at Bear.
The fruit hit Bear as he gave a yelp. Sophie knew if she did anything about it he would come after her next. But she couldn't just 'leave it'.
"Noah, Bear doesn't mean to cause you any harm or disturbance." Sophie said, trying to put it as submissive as possible.
His head whipped around as he stood to his feet, stomping over to Sophie and pushing her against the counter. His hand pressing deep into her side as she struggled to breath through the pain.
"I don't care. He needs to learn manners." Noah pressed himself into her as his hand tightened its grip. She swallowed hard as she closed her eyes. Hoping he would just stop.
After a moment of silence he let his grip go and she gasped for air.
"I'm sorry." She stuttered her words as she turned to finish the bacon.
She could feel Noah's piercing blue eyes glaring at her. "I am no longer hungry. I am going out." He replied to her.
A rush of relief came across Sophie at his words. She heard him grab his keys, put on his shoes and shut the door behind him. She couldn't help but collapse to the floor, tears streaming down her face.
Every night he would say he loved her and that he was sorry. Everyday she would believe him. Every time he hit her. She thought it would be the last time. But every morning, she was proven wrong...
