Sophie opened her eyes as the alarm on her phone sounded. Groggily she stood swung her legs over the edge of the bed. As they hit the floor she slowly stood up and looked back at the figure still asleep on the other side of the bed.

She heard a jingling noise and looked over to see Bear, her Golden Retriever dog.

"Hey Bear." She welcomed him as his tail wagged and he placed his head by her hand. Running her hand against his head she quietly sighed and walked down the hallway and into the living room.

She gave a quick look around as she saw how messy the house was. Shaking her head she then headed to the kitchen to see what they had for groceries.

The fridge seemed empty. There were only a few eggs left and enough milk for one glass. As she grabbed the contents in the fridge she set them aside, placed a pan on the stove and poured some oil in it.

As she cracked the eggs and placed them into the pan she could hear footsteps coming her direction. She couldn't help but think that this morning would be different than the last. Just maybe it would be.

She was wrong. The man's voice deepened as he bellowed at her, "did I ask for eggs for breakfast?"

Hesitating to speak she looked down to the floor at her bare feet, "no."

She knew what would come next as it was a daily routine. His hand came across her cheek, instantly she dropped the spatula and held her hands to her face.

"Pick that up." He demanded, stepping closer to her to close the gap between them as his breath felt heavy on her face.

Leaning down she did as he asked and set the spatula on the counter next to the stove. "Noah, please." She stated, not as a question but as a plea.

Silence overwhelmed Sophie as she stood motionless in front of him. Stepping back from her Noah huffed, "go to the store and get some decent food." He reached over to shut off the stove, grabbing the pan and throwing the eggs in the trash.

Sophie nodded as she slowly walked out of the kitchen, her cheek still stinging from the hit. Bear was huddled in the corner, as he saw her walk out of the kitchen he ran over to her and gave her hand a gentle nudge.

Smiling softly at the dog she looked into his eyes as if to say she was sorry for the way they lived. The keys jingled as she grabbed them off the hook and opened the door to go get groceries.

She heard Noah behind her, his breath on her neck. Sophie froze instead of walking out, she knew he wanted something.

"Don't forget more milk." The breath that came off his lips sent a threatening shiver down her spine as she simply nodded and left the house.
