The cold autumn air brushed against Violet's face as she fumbled for her keys. She slipped it into the lock and opened the door. The warm air of her apartment greeted her like an old friend. Violet's roommate, Grace sat on their beat up old couch eating Chinese takeout. Violet always complained about that sorry excuse for a sofa and begged her to get rid of it because it was older than her great grandmother, but she refused because it was a "classic antique". "Violet", she managed through a mouthful of orange chicken, "you're back, it's about time." "Sorry", She apologized setting her keys on the kitchen counter, "I almost ran over this cat in the road and I swerved into a ditch trying not to hit it." "Was the cat okay?", questioned Grace as she stuffed her face with rice and broccoli. "I swerve into a ditch and you're worried about the damn cat?" "Well you look fine.", Grace shrugged. "You know I don't exactly hate you, but if you were on fire and I had water I'd drink it." Grace rolled her eyes smiling. "What color was the cat?", she asked picking at the remnants of her takeout. "Grace", Violet sighed rubbing her temples, "I don't know." "I think it was black" "Are you happy now, will you please stop asking about the cat?" "My mom used to tell me that whenever you see a black cat something bad is gonna happen.", Grace said getting up to throw away her takeout box. "You really believe in that superstitious bullshit.", She scoffed. "I didn't say I believed in it.", Grace defended. "Whatever, is there anything on tv?", Violet said walking over to the dust sack of a couch. "No", Grace replied, "just some info-mercials and re-runs of Seinfeld." It was nearly 1:30 in the morning, nothing was going to be on. She told Grace goodnight and decided to head to bed. Violet completed her nightly routine which consisted of brushing her teeth, changing clothes, and picking at the blemishes on her face for about 15 minutes. She finally climbed into bed, snuggling into her soft, fluffy, comforter and silk sheets and scrolled through Instagram until she got tired. Around 2:00 am she finally fell into a deep slumber. Everything around her faded slowly and sleep fell over her like warm honey.
3:33 am
Violet was awoken by a flash of light and the feeling of hands on her ankles. She blinked and saw what looked like a patch of thick, white smoke and a dark figure. "You're coming with me, I need you to help me settle a bet." "What the fuck?", was all Violet could say as she was dragged into the mysterious mist.
