Ravana

Hunched over the table I work studiously on flashcards for Sigillum Studies. I have to make sure I get the meanings and can draw them accurately. I need to be ready for the test. School ended a while ago the classes for the rest of the day weren't that interesting. In Defensive Arts we practiced on punching bags, Mystic Erasure was just one big history lesson, and in Divine Magick we just went over safety rules. I managed to stay attentive but it was quite boring.

Adruinna sits on the couch watching tv absentmindedly, continuously glancing over every few seconds. I can't take this anymore, "Is there something you need?"

"Huh? Um...Nah. I'm good", she babbles before gaining composure, "Actually I did have a question. Do you even like girls? Like, have you ever had romantic feelings for a girl? And are you upset that I'm your mate because I'm a girl or because I'm a Hymphire?"

"Both. You're my family's rival, the last werewolf I thought I would be mated with. Everyone has an expectation of what their mate would be like. I didn't expect you", I respond honestly. Maybe this will deter her from wanting to get closer to me.

"Was it your expectations I failed or your parents?" I fiddle with my ring not knowing how to respond not even able to look at her. "When we were at the ceremony you immediately looked into the crowd once you realized we were mates. You were looking for your parents to make sure they didn't see yet, weren't you. You're practically begging for their approval."

"I don't beg", I reply snobbishly.

"I doubt that", she says with a smirk.

"I'm going to do homework now, that's if you don't have any more invasive questions for me."

"I'm sure I'll think of some later and maybe then you'll answer all of them. Unlike now."

I turn back to my homework in a huff, ignoring her presence until I finish and retreat into the bedroom. Stripping down I dump my clothes in the laundry basket getting into the shower. Hot water sprays me running down my skin and relaxing my every muscle. Living with this girl seems like it's going to be irritating. Maybe I should schedule a spa day every other week to relieve the stress she's gonna give me. Finishing up, I wrap a towel around me heading into the room just to find Adruinna on the bed. Ugh. I turn my back towards her as I drop my towel throwing on a  nightgown. Turning around I catch Adruinna staring, her once hazel eyes now glimmering a golden yellow. "Staring much?"

"Shit, sorry", she mumbles turning her attention elsewhere as she grabs my book from the nightstand.

I lie next to her though I face away, "To answer your questions from earlier, I...I have liked girls before, but I've never dated any. I didn't plan on dating one either. And you were right you didn't just fail my expectations but my parents too because they're the same. I planned to be mated and married to a man, not you, so sorry if I'm rude or taken aback by this."

"Well since we're being honest, I'm a bit upset too. I was ecstatic at the ceremony because I thought I had won the jackpot. Thinking to myself I just got the most beautiful kind-looking, mate. Yet you ran away crying like I was the most horrible thing to happen to you."

I turn, facing her, "I'm sorry. I didn't mean for it to come across like that. I was panicking."

"Okay. Since we're done with the pettiness. How was your first day?"

"Good, not very eventful but your friends are quite funny. They all bicker like old couples. Yours?"

"Could've been better but I did enjoy flirting with you. That was the highlight of my day."

"Oh really?", I say, I can't help but smile.

She brushes my hair behind my ear letting her hand rest there. I lean in without thinking, our lips brushing, I shouldn't. She closes the gap pressing her lips against mine, her eyes glowing golden as she pulls back.
