We see you really are interested in The Pencil Prize. That's great! We were worried you would miss out on this awesome opportunity.
So, how does The Pencil Prize work? Well, let us tell you.
First, we'll have an audition period. This period ends August 31st, because we know you might be doing NaNoWriMo or some other cool thing that needs a lot of time. So we gave you more than a month to get in your entry, which, hopefully, should be enough time.
To audition, you should send us the first chapter of a completely new book. You can have the prologue and the first chapter if you'd like, but no more than the first chapter should be written, or else you won't be entered. We're sorry, but that's how it goes. Multiple entries are allowed, though!
Send us the link to your chapter in the comments below OR by private message. We'll add it to a library based on the category your book falls into. The categories will be something along the lines of: fanfiction AU, fanfiction, humor, teen fiction, romance, etc. We're not quite sure yet, because we're making the categories based on how many people enter. Also, you might want to tag it as #pencilprize2014 , but make sure to send us the link or we can't promise you'll be entered. If you sent us the link to your story and it is not added to a library within a few days please resend the link. We'd like to say we're perfect humans who always get everything right, but alas, we are not.
Add this booklet to your library and follow this account along with the accounts of the judges so you can keep up with new things. We will not personally message the winners or losers, nor will we message people about the rounds. We will publish chapters and make announcements of who won and directions for each new round. It's important you have the ability to receive updates.
Once you send us your entry just sit back and wait. After August 31st we'll announce who made it to the next round. You had better be ready to find out who made it through, because once these people are announced the real fun begins!
You'll have two weeks to write each chapter. At the end of the competition (if you make it to the end) you will have twelve chapters, but your story doesn't need to end there.
There will be a twist each chapter. We can't tell you what this is yet, but let's just say it'll be fun for us, and might annoy you. But only a little. Maybe. Sorry! However, the twists will not affect the plot of your story.
Unfortunately, there will be eliminations. In the first round, we'll probably eliminate one third or half of the contestants. Either way, there will be eliminations. Great fun, isn't it?
The top three get an advantage. Which is great! It's kind of like Masterchef, in a way. The top three chapters we think are the best will get an advantage for the next round. So write well (which we're sure you already do). These people will be chosen by our guest judge of the week (look below to see who these people will be).
For the first few rounds, you'll be competing within your category. Isn't that great? For a little while you'll be fighting against other fanfic authors like you, or other people who write teen fiction. After that you'll be going against everyone else. Good luck with that.
The awards? Ah yes, that's a thing you'll want to know.
The person who wins in his or her category will get a mini-prize, like announcement on this account or a follow from us. So basically, you just need to be better than all the other authors in your genre who entered and you'll get something nice.
The Ultimate Winner will get promotions. Tons and tons of promotions. And their name on The Pencil Prize account for all of eternity (or until Wattpad shuts down). That'd be a fan reach of like, 150,000 fans, since each judge will promote the winner, and some of us have quite a lot of people who like us. Yay!
