(real life)
it was the last day before lucas had to leave. lilia was dreading this day. what she didn't know, however, was that lucas had something important to ask her. her two other best friends, margaret-louise and sadie, had helped lucas plan a picnic before he had to leave toronto.
as lilia drove to the park closest to her apartment with lucas in the passenger seat, she couldn't help but wonder what was going to happen. deep down, she always had feelings for lucas, but she was never sure if she would ever act on those feelings.
when she arrived at the park with lucas, she felt nervous. she's been alone with him before, but for some reason, this was different. she had a feeling. during the picnic, they talked about their usual topics, like the state of lucas's plants, how lilia's movie was going, etc.
"so, all this talk about the future has led me to our next topic. why don't you ever mention your dating life?", asked lucas randomly."well, i guess i don't like to talk about because literally no one likes me; it's a curse. my mom met my dad when she was twenty-five. he was her first boyfriend," replied lilia. she knew where the conversation was heading, so she played along.
"that's definitely not true. i know plenty of people that would love to date you."
"oh yeah? like who?"
"me."
even though lilia knew what he was going to say, him saying it out loud made her do a double take. after lucas said those words, she remained silent for about a minute. her thinking was interrupted by lucas clearing his throat.
"so, uh, what do you say? should we try this whole dating thing out or should i just shut up and never talk about it again?" lucas asked quickly, worried he'd said the wrong thing.
"i'd love to try it out. even though i won't be home for two weeks, this can definitely work," lilia answered, reassuring lucas that everything was alright.
"i've been wanting to ask you that question since we were thirteen. i can't tell you how many times i almost did."
"well i'm kind of glad you didn't then because the way you did today was perfect."
with that said, she kissed him on the cheek. soon after finishing their meal, they walked back to the car, hand in hand. they had done this before, but it was never in a way like this. with their fingers intertwined, lucas smiled to himself and thanked god.
on the ground, lilia spotted a yellow flower sitting on the curb. she picked it up, stuck it behind lucas's ear and said, "you look so handsome today. i can't believe i never said anything either." she took a picture of lucas as she said that, causing him to blush.
