"Okay" Nani whispered to herself. The walk to school was coming to an end, her heart was racing and she was only a few hundred feet away from the high school. Her faded purple backpack was strapped tightly to her shoulders and she was carrying a few old textbooks as they wouldn't fit in her bag. She was dragging her feet now, slowing her pace to a sluggish walk. Nani kept talking to herself though, hoping to calm her own nerves. "Today is going to be different" she reassured. "And ya know what?" the girl continued. "I bet if you tried really hard, you could make a friend or two today." That was a lie, Nani was getting her hopes up and she knew it, nothing ever changed.... Ever.
She continued soothing herself until the muffled roar of a car engine disrupted her conversation, it sputtered loudly and was making very irritating noises. The girl looked up and narrowed her eyes as an old, beat up mustang drove by, slowing besides her. She gripped her textbooks tightly, quickening her pace while trying to ignore the car. It was an ugly orange and smelled funny, causing her to scrunch her nose. Music was blasting through the windows and there were more obnoxious teenagers inside the damn car than it was meant to handle. Something resembling a beer can flew out the window, narrowly missing her head. She snapped her head up, glaring at them as they yelled some unintelligible words at her before taking off down the street towards the school. Nani stopped on the side walk, listening to their laughs until they were out of earshot. She squinted after the car as if remember something, "Wait a minute, it's all coming back to me now." Her voice became extremely sarcastic "I hate people". She picked up the can that had been previously thrown at her, tossing it in the direction of the car in exasperation. Nani heard someone snort in response, followed by some quiet chuckling. She furrowed her brows before glancing around, the girl had thought she was alone on the street. That was apparently not the case... Across the road an older looking boy was watching her with a giant grin slapped on his face. He was still laughing, it was a friendly laugh, but he was laughing at her nonetheless. Nani frowned at the boy, "Glad you find me funny." she mumbled angrily before spinning around and continuing towards the school.

Nani had just stepped into class when the bell rung, it was loud and was more of a tone than a ring. The girl found it's blaring voice extremely irritating. She frowned, walking to the back of the classroom, taking her seat at a small wooden table. Nani slipped off her backpack and placed it into the chair next to her so that she could remain alone, not that anyone wanted to sit beside her anyways. Nani prayed her stomach wouldn't growl in the middle of class, closing her eyes. As soon as she leaned back in her chair, students started flooding through the door, they were all talking and about half of the class was late. The instructor didn't pay any mind to it though, she was too busy drawing her name in huge letters on the chalk board. "MS. CARTER" The teacher nodded and smiled at her work, quickly turning around to face her class "Good morning everyone! My name is Ms.Carter, welcome back to AP Chemistry!" the woman cheered. Nani shook her head, Ms.Carter did this at the beginning of every class, like her students were too stupid to remember her name. They were halfway through the school year and it was beginning to get ridiculous. Scratch that, it was ridiculous after the first week, now it was just sad.
After 58 minutes of Ms.Carter trying to get the class to sing a song about chemisty, Nani practically ran out of the room when the bell rung. "What the hell, I thought this was high school?" She thought to herself. Nani sighed in frustration before continuing to her next class. The hallways were crowded with people, people who were yelling over each other, people who were pushing past each other, people who were doing homework on the floor, people who were making out against the lockers... Just people.... Everywhere... There wasn't any space and before she knew it someone smashed into her backside, knocking the books from her hands and onto the floor. She immediately followed them, cringing on the ground as her flesh burned in between her shoulders. Who ever it was had pushed right into the carving on her back, causing a wrenching pain to radiate down her spine. Nani was gasping and trying to steady herself so she could reach her books, tears were stinging the back of her eyes as she tried to fight away the pain. It was burning and people were pushing past her, trampling her books and kicking them further away. Someone stepped on her hand, as she let out a pained yelp. Everything was hurting and everyone was ignoring her as she scrambled on the floor.
Nani crawled forward reaching at the books but just before she could get any closer to them, a pair of large hands reached down and grabbed the textbooks. Her eyes widened as she started to shout "H-hey! Those are mine! Those are my-" Nani was cut off as the stranger pulled her up and handed the books over. She was silent for a moment before looking at the boy in confusion, a pair of dark, gentle eyes stared back at her. Nani immediately recognized him as the boy from across the road, he looked... Different standing in front of her. She tilted her head and narrowed her eyes before speaking "You're much taller up close.." It got quiet for a minute. Smooth. Nani was cringing inside, but as odd as it sounded it was true, the boy was a damn giraffe. She waited for him to give her some look of disgust or regret but much to her suprise and relief, he laughed kindly. After a moment the stranger shook his head and smiled "Well you're welcome." He then quickly turned around and continued down the halls. Nani shrugged and did the same, heading to her next class.
She hadn't realized before but giraffe was in a few of her classes, but besides that the rest of the day went normally for Nani. She was tripped by a few people, had her stuff thrown on the ground twice, she was laughed at and called a few creative names, ate lunch by herself (grabbing a few apples from the salad bar for home), aced a test and walked home alone with minimal homework. It was actually a decent day for her, and it was even better when she came home to an empty house. Her uncle hadn't been home since saturday and that was fine and dandy with Nani if he never came back. The rest of the night went by quickly, Nani hid her stolen food, finished some homework, drew a few memories, and then crawled into bed.
