Chapter One

4 1 1

I'm one of the worst people out there. I walk my neighbors’ dogs everyday after school. I do all my homework and get solid 'B's. Not the best, but still not terrible. Kid sitting alone at lunch? Not on my watch. My mom will rarely hear me complain about anything. Kindness? Got plenty to go around. But here's the terrible part. I'm gay. So it amounts to nothing.

Well...technically speaking, I'm not gay. I'm a lesbian. But it's like an unspoken rule that when someone says they're gay, people automatically assume that they mean they like people of the other gender. I'm sure the only people that really get triggered about it are people with no lives and who like to get offended for fun. Not like I've said it to anyone before to prove my point though.

    Anyway.

"Jeezus, Ashtyn," Jordan, my wonderful and only transgender friend (and my only friend for that matter), leaned over and smacked me on the shoulder, “your leg is shaking like crazy! You nervous about something?” They stared at me, concerned, as I glanced down and realized that I was tapping wildly with my foot, causing my leg to bounce up and down. “Oh, crap, sorry!” I apologized hastily, placing my hand firmly on my knee, “I didn't realize I was doing it again.” Jordan smirked, their face full of laughter and playful energy. “Just like you didn't realize you're making eyes at Kayda and her boyfriend again?” They remark slyly. Jordan was right. Right in my line of sight, Kayda sat, doing her math homework in a nearby desk, while Austin ‘McDouche’ Hardy clung to her like like a barnacle to ship, passionately kissing her neck. She looked more than mildly annoyed but didn't say anything to stop it. I found myself getting angry and forced myself to look away. “Aw, shut up, Jord,” I joked, staring my friend in the face. I lowered my voice, “She's so attractive though, can you blame me? She deserves way better than a douchebag like Austin.”

Jord looked like they understood all too well. They nodded, but shot a wistful glance in their direction. “Pity,” Jordan mumbled. “What's a pity?” I asked, confused. “It’s a pity she's straight,” They sighed, “You guys would be the bombest couple of all time.”

Now it was my turn to smack Jordan on the arm. They recoiled and laughed. “What? I'm serious! Totally my OTP. When's the wedding?” Jordan said the last sentence with a taunting smile. I rolled my eyes and laughed sarcastically, “Haha. Very funny.” “Quiet students! Others are trying to do their work,” Mrs. Abbott snapped at us. Jord and I rolled our eyes, but nevertheless, we tackled the math homework.

“Yikes,” I muttered, staring down at the complex numbers that littered the page. Jordan snickered. I rolled my eyes and glanced up at the clock. Only two more minutes left in the period. Jeezus, how long can two minutes be?
Giving up, I angrily stuffed the problematic paper carelessly in the largest pocket of my backpack. Jordan followed suit. It was clear that we’d both had enough. I shot a side glance at Kayda, Austin still hanging onto her like a lost puppy. It was like Mrs. Abbott didn’t even notice their little make out session. Just watching it made multiple people angry, and not just Jordan and me.

Austin was the biggest fuckboy in the world.

I’m stating this as a simple fact.

Almost every girl in the school was head over heels for him. Me being the exception of course. Maybe I should put it this way… Everyone was jealous of their relationship. Every boy wanted to get Kayda in a bed and treat her like some kind of toy, and (almost) every girl wanted Kayda to die so they could get their hands on Austin. I just don’t see it. His hair isn’t anything special, he always has a stupid, unflattering smile plastered on his face, and yeah he has muscles, but that just means he could murder you with no hesitation. What’s the hype?

    Kayda on the other hand…

    She’s a fucking angel.

Her shoulder length hair is beautiful and naturally curly. Not the crazy curl though...more of the...you know, the kind that doesn’t frizz and make her look like a younger version of Taylor Swift. It looks almost as if she curled it herself. Gorgeous. And her eyes? Oh damn, those blue-grey eyes hold the world. Blue-grey seems like it’s almost a boring eye color, but with her it’s different. They’re so captivating and beautiful, I can’t look at them without losing my breath and getting tongue tied. And if you know me, you know I always know what to say. Her freckles don’t make her look even the slightest bit nerdy, in fact, they made her look all the more stunning. Every detail about her was beautiful, and quite literally took my breath away. I wish I knew her better, but what I do know is that she deserves much better than Austin for a boyfriend.
