‘I LOVE YOU’

She rested her palm on his shoulders. He turned back, curious to see who could have thought of him at this odd hour. No one, he had reckoned, hence had desisted from thinking he was worthy of any love.

She gave him an assuring look. And her feeble but ever enchanting smile that seemed to be saying ‘you don’t need to worry anymore. I’m here.’

“Tum ?!” said a visibly startled Randhir.

Sanyukta smiled in reply, a smile that was hindering him in sporting a “I-am-fine-and-I-don’t-bloody-need-your-help” attitude. Her shimmering eyes made him question whether what he had opined about the world in general, hold true for her.

No matter she had said “I’ll be there for you”, but not everyone who promises does fulfil it right? But she did. Tears rolled down his cheeks that camouflaged themselves with the rain drops.

‘Arey ajeeb insaan ho!’ She said breaking his trance.
‘Baarish main bhig rahe ho.. Kahin thand lag gayi toh?’
‘Dekho.. Mujhe tumhari fawning advice ki koi zaroorat nahi hai..’
‘Arey aise kaise zaroorat nahi hai? Friend ho tum mere!’

He was more happy than surprised.

‘Band karo ye bakwaas apna aur jaao andar ! Warna phir sardi ho jayegi.. aur classes miss honge and classes miss honge toh..’ He stopped halfway knowing he could blurt it out all if he started.

‘Achha babu !’ She moved her hands to her waist. ‘Sardi mujhe ho sakti hai tumhe nahi !’

‘Dekho Randhir mujhe ye sab nahi pata.. bas tum ye nahi bech rahe.. ‘ She said pointing towards the unshielded bike.

“What !! She knew it !” He smiled inwardly. He’d pursed his lips, but the joviality had reached his eyes. He stared lovingly at this lady-love.

She surmised his bewilderment.

‘Dekho.. This engine is the last of it’s kind.. And you’ve put in months of time and labour to build this.. You can’t give up this easy.. okay?’

He was staring with the same expression.

She came closer and pressed his hand for a good measure.
‘Randhir main samajhti hoon.. Meri bhi toh yehi haalat hain.. But losing hope is not in your dictionary right? We’ll do something..’ She whispered close to his ears, the assuring grin back on her face.

‘We’.. Yes we’d definitely do something. He nodded.

‘Aur waise bhi..’ She fell back to place.
‘Baarish main mariyal aatma jaise ghoomna band karo and iska maza lo.. Abe k ride toh banta hai na Mr MCP.. uhmm I mean Mr generous..’ She said with a luring smile.

He was flummoxed. But this time he didn’t purse his lips. He couldn’t. In these 6 months everyone he’d laid faith in had deceived him, making him feel dejected. But each time the reason of his smile was her.

He started his bike and waited for her to sit behind. The ambience had the fascination. He had decided. He’ll let her know, let her know before it’s too late.. He was tentative earlier but firm now.

‘Yayyyy!!’ She was feverishly enjoying the rain. It was queer to him, but he sure loved the way, her way.

The ride was over, but she wasn’t content. She splashed the accumulated rain towards him.

‘Kitne cute lag rahe ho.. Ekdum mere teddy jaise..’ She chortled.

‘Sanyukta I need to tell you something..’ His heart cajoled him to tell her what he actually felt for her.

‘Bolo naa jaldi !’ She grimaced.

He gave her his notepad where he'd hysterically jotted down his unflinching feelings for her. She proceeded to read it, curiously.

‘I love you..’ He finally blurted out. An unknown silence shrouded them.

‘I don’t know how to pr.. propose someone.. I have never felt so for anyone in my life.. I’m imperfect, an MCP, impudent.. But I love.. love only you..  and.. and you mus.. must be thinking that.... ’

She pulled him for an approving hug. ‘I know you’re not lying..’ He was stunned to silence at her unorthodox move. He’d expected her to rebuff him.

‘You say I changed you.. That I complete you.. You say I’m the most beautiful.. I donot know.. I don’t know how far that is true.. But I could see the change in you.. You are surly.. But you are definitely not a bad person..’

She slipped her fingers through his hair while saying this. ‘I cant say if I love you Randhir.. But.. but I surely have a friend in you that I don’t want to lose... even after I get married..’

‘Thank.. Thank you...’ He pulled her into a bear hug, tighter than ever. ‘But I’ll never let you go..’

‘I know. And I’ll fulfil my promise.. I’ll always be there for you..’
‘The rain has stopped. Probably we should go..’ She said holding his hands in her hands, so she could never lose him.
