the soft sounds of the forest surrounding them mixed with the bit of sound coming from the counselors that arrived early and are already setting up camp as they hit the group's ears, already giving them camping vibes that some of them longed for.
his thoughts were interrupted by the sound of a dog barking - the piercing, echoing sound filling his ears loudly caused him to jump slightly but filled him with a bit of excitement - honestly, dogs made him happier than almost anything.
he turned his head to the sound and saw a medium sized golden retriever jump out of the trunk of the car he was just in, the animal somehow going unnoticed during the lengthy trip. it sniffed the ground once it was out before snapping its head in miles' direction and seeing the awe in his expression, then hurried to get to the boy, throwing its front paws against his dark clothing. he somehow wasn't upset about its actions, but, instead, he smiled. the force of the dog caused miles to stumble back small, causing the others watching to laugh a bit and a blush to grow slightly against his skin as he laughed some with them.
the next few moments were filled with he and two other campers - including ethan - petting its soft fur and complimenting the dog, miles eventually asking its name.
"maple," one of the female counselors - norah, a girl with dark hair and round glasses - replied, continuing to attempt to calm the dog so she could hook the leash to her collar. "but, for whatever reason, she also answers to lolo? which is hella strange," she giggled quietly, making eye contact with miles and smiling as she did so while the boys laughed a bit, too.
"well, she's beautiful and i may or may not take her home when this camp's over," ethan spoke up, his voice smooth and his sweet laugh growing small as the words spilled from his lips. miles nodded in agreement as his eyes met ethan's features, but only for a second before turning back to maple.
"not on my watch you two won't," her laugh grew as well before finally attaching the latch to the animal's collar and letting out a triumphant cheer.
before the three could say anything more, a male counselor miles has never seen before jogged over, telling the group that there's gonna be a meeting in the cafeteria in about ten minutes and that everyone should take all of their things to the main room before hand. everyone understandingly nodded, few letting out verbal replies and others remaining silent.
time passed quickly as many chatted while packing their things inside and helping others, while miles kept quiet and to himself, feeling a bit awkward as his long legs took him back and forth from the car to the rather large building. he noticed a campfire pit not too far from it, as well as some trails leading to different areas he didn't truly know of - only assuming they led to where tents were placed - and a greenhouse also quite close to the log building. everything somehow felt familiar to him, which was strange, being he's never been to this area even once.
his thoughts were interrupted by a light nudge against his shoulder and hearing a light 'hey' as someone matched miles' pace, the someone turning out to be the blue haired boy he couldn't seem to escape, which he didn't seek to mind at all.
"hey ethan," he smiled small, his hazel eyes meeting his pale blue ones for a bit before falling back to the ground in front of him, the other boy's doing the same.
"or 'hey, awkward situation savior,' but ethan works, too," he smiled wide as well, his head turned up to view miles' features for a second or two before looking ahead. the taller boy let out a laugh, nodding as he shrugged small.
"fair enough," he replied. the two continued talk and crack jokes as they finished their final trip into the main room, finally walking into the cafeteria and sitting next to each other.
two smaller, connected tables filled up quickly as the group of counselors sat, everyone sitting elbow to elbow next to one another. norah sat across from the two just a few seats further down, making conversation with the girl next to her with a bit of a glint in her eye as she smiled at her. miles couldn't tell what she was saying, but she seemed happy.
"guys, hey- shut the fuck up," a woman who held a southern accent in her tone that also looked to be a bit older than miles yelled over everyone's voices, quickly forcing the ones who were speaking to settle down quickly.
"yeah ethan, you heard her," he almost whispered as he gently jabbed ethan's side, interrupting his quiet thinking before letting out a small laugh that ethan picked up before jabbing miles as well.
"so, welcome to camp uubiwakie, everyone. im tanya, and i guess you could say i'm the head counselor of the camp," she introduced herself. "the 'students' are gonna be here in about, uh-" tanya checked her watch, "forty-five minutes, so that gives all of you plenty of time to introduce yourselves to one another and set up your tents. and speaking of tents, i can't be bothered to read who your tentmate is, so the list is on the table next to the sign in sheet, as well as your badge, and a lantern, so just grab your shirt, sign in, and you're free to go," she smiled, jumping from her position on the chair to the floor as we all stood and migrated to the table behind us to grab our things.
miles couldn't help not but notice norah grabbing the hand of the girl she was sitting beside and hurried excitedly to the list, causing him to laugh quietly as he stood, too.
"she seems.. interesting," ethan spoke with a bit of a smirk on his pink lips as he suddenly appeared at his side, miles' lips also turning up to mimic ethan's grin that he somehow just couldn't stop eyeing. as soon as he noticed he was staring, he quickly looked up to meet the blue-haired boys eyes, then to his dark nike's with a bit of heat radiating from the skin on his face as he cleared his throat.
"no kidding, holy shit," he laughed small, a bit awkwardly. the red grew and beamed, only making him more nervous that the boy would notice and praying that he wouldn't.
his heart thumped in his chest as he approached the table with the tent list on it, a bit scared of who he'd have to share a tent with. his deep eyes scanned the list for his name, frantic until he found his name next to a girl who seemed unfamiliar - a girl named eleanorah williams.
