My hands were handcuffed above my head to the shower railing. My face felt like it had been trampled on and I tasted blood in my mouth. Barone was standing in the doorframe, his gun waving around as he talked.

“I thought you were different. I hoped I could make something out of you.”

“Sorry I’m such a disappointment,” I grinned and I knew it must not have been a pretty sight. I caught a glimpse of my reflection in the mirror. My teeth were bloody, my lip had a gash and my arms were starting to bruise from the struggle.

“You’re way too cocky for your own good. It’s like you don’t fully understand that I’m the cat and you’re the mouse. News flash, sweetie, you’re caught in a trap.” He came in closer and ran the back of his hand over my cheek. I tried to pull away. I hated the way he touched me. My rejection just got me another slap across the face.

“It’s a pity I had to further ding up that pretty face of yours. You look so much like her, you know. Her eyes, her nose, except that dirty brown hair of yours. I guess you must have gotten that from him.”

I turned to face him again. He had known my mother.

“Surprised?” he asked and let out a chuckle, “I thought you’d be. I knew your mother. You two have more in common than you think.”

“What do you mean?” I asked after swallowing a mouth full of blood. It almost made me gag.

“She and I were going to bring down the fucking IRA. We just needed someone to grab a foothold inside an organisation that dealt with them. That’s why we chose her: A young girl, just like you, on the wrong side of the tracks with no way of getting out. Well, at least not until I presented her with the opportunity. She was going to have a good life after it was all done; a good life with me.”

“But then,” he spat right there on the floor, “She told me she found your father again. She said they were in love and ready to be a family. I couldn’t allow that. She was mine and only mine. So I did what I had to do. I shoved those pills down her throat, but she didn’t want to swallow the damn things. I lost my patience and strangled her right there and then. I convinced the medical examiner to reconsider his call on cause of death and the new report ruled it as a suicide, the bruising from a failed hanging attempt.

“I was heartbroken. She was my everything. I loved her with all that I had and she felt nothing  for me!” he moved like a bullet and smashed the mirror with his bare knuckles. His hand was dripping blood on the floor.

“But then you showed up at the precinct. It was like you were sent to me. I had another chance with her. But you were too much like her and I knew you’d abandon me too. So I didn’t even try. Now I know I was right. Look at you, you enjoy being a whore. You want to be a part of that life.

“Don’t worry, it’s not too late.” He ran his bloodied hand up my shirt and held the small of my back.

My jaw was quivering and I just wanted to get away. It was too much. He breathed on my neck.

“If I couldn’t have her, you’ll just have to do.”

He pulled away from me and undid his pants. He tossed it to the side and stood hovering over me. He pulled my skirt up and my panties down.

“Please, don’t.” my voice was nothing but a whisper.

“I like it when you play hard to get,” he said and the hand that wasn’t bloodied grabbed my bottom. He leant in close and sickeningly ran his tongue up my neck.

“The first time is always the hardest, but you’ll get used to it and stop fighting it.” He swiftly turned me around so my arms were crossed above my head. I started sobbing uncontrollably. He was going to rape me and I couldn’t even defend myself. All I could do was pray that it would end soon.

BANG!

The gunshot came and I felt Barone slump against my back until he fell to the floor. I screamed.

“Quinn!” Jax’s voice called. My head dropped to my neck and I cried even harder. He spun me back around. He pulled my skirt back down before he fumbled in the pockets of Barone’s pants before pulling out the keys to unlock the cuffs.

I hugged him after he freed me and sobbed into his chest.

“We have to go,” he said pulling me from him, “The cops are going to be here any minute.”
