Nicole
I woke up the next morning to an empty bed. Last night after Elite left, I didn't have time to wait up for him to argue again because I had morning classes. Besides I really had nothing to say to him until he started acting mature.
I went to Leighanne's room and found that she was not there, standing up in her crib, waiting for me as she usually did. Panicking I ran into the living room and saw her sleeping on Elite's chest on the couch. They both were resting peacefully.
Relieved, I walked back to our room to take a shower and get dressed for school. Once I was ready, I crept to the front door, careful not to wake Leigh up. And because I didn't wanna deal with Elite this morning.
...
"Nicole, can I speak to you?" Professor Jacobs asked, after class ended.
"Sure," I stopped at his desk.
"You okay?" He asked, concerned, taking a seat at the edge of his desk.
"Yes, I'm fine. Why?"
"You seemed out if it during today's lecture. I could tell that something's on your mind."
"I just have some issues I'm dealing with. Thats all. I'll be more alert next time."
"You want talk about it?" He asked. "Maybe over lunch?"
"Professor Ja-"
"Call me Brian outside of class, please."
"Okay, um, Brian. I really don't need to talk about anything I'm fine, really," I said again.
"Nicole, I know you're lying. You know you're lying and whatever is on your mind needs to be let out. And aside from being a Professor, I am a good listener as well. And if you're only tryna get outta this because of the bill, I'll pay."
I chuckled, looking away, still in doubt. He noticed.
"No funny business, just talking," He promised.
I sighed. "Okay."
He smiled widely and led me to a small cafe near campus. We found a table near the window and ordered sandwiches and water.
"So whats on your mind?" He asked, biting into his Philly cheese steak sandwich.
"Its my boyfriend. I love him to death, you know, but sometimes he can be a pain in the you know what."
He chuckled. "We've all been there. What did he do?"
"I told him that I passed the test and that I was going to medical school to be a nurse and he tells me basically not to go until our daughter grows up."
"So he wants you to be soccer mom?"
"It seems so. I love Leighanne so much but I can't just not be what I wanted to be ever since I was younger. This is my dream."
He nodded. "You know, Nicole, you should follow your dreams. You're one of the smartest students in my class and I'd hate to see you throw all that away just because a man told you to. He has no right to take your dream away from you."
"Well, I understand where's he coming from. I don't want a stranger babysitting my baby either but I just wanted him to let me make that choice of being a stay at home mother or not."
He leaned in like he was gonna tell me a secret. "Well do you want to be one?"
"I don't even know," I sighed, eating another potato chip.
"Well whatever you choose to do you, make it your choice. Not because of what he wants you to do."
I nodded and smiled a little. "Thanks Prof-...I mean Brian. I really needed this vent."
